Not bad, not bad at all.

Vista is not as bad as I feared. It's not getting in the way too much, and I'm not even finding the UAC too bad (yet). I did struggle to set the Wireless networking up. First time I ran it, I set it up with WPA-PSK using my existing setup and it worked. It downloaded a bunch of updates and rebooted, then didn't work again. I had to downgrade the router to WEP before I could get wireless working. I'll look into that further when I've got more time.

I'm currently running an image of my old laptop in a VMWare session. That's progress for you!

There is a reason for that though. The VPN software we use at work doesn't run on Vista, so I'm having to run it in a VM. It's really quite nippy. The VMWare'd laptop image doesn't seem to run much more slowly than the old laptop. So, that's all good.

I was up and running (updates installed, Firefox, Thunderbird and VMWare installed and running) in less than an hour. Quite impressive.

Built in webcam! (I'm not sure that's a good thing)

Gaaa!

Initial impressions.

  1. It's big. I would go so far as to say, very big.
  2. It's a bit plasticy. The keyboard doesn't feel as solid as I expected.
  3. I'm having trouble with the trackpad. It's no where near as sensitive as the old machine, so I'm struggling on the fine selection.
  4. I had to burn my own recovery DVD's. Not unexpected, but the program was difficult to find, and the instructions for how to do it weren't prominent. They were hidden away in the PDF manual on the machine, not in the printed manual anywhere.
  5. I keep hitting the trackpad with the heal of my thumb, sending focus off god knows where.
Overall, pretty happy.

I got a Dell XPS in at work by wiredog (2.00 / 0) #1 Thu Dec 06, 2007 at 07:20:01 PM EST
As that is the only developer class machine that doesn't come with Vista.  Unfortunately, it comes with XP Media Center, and the office is on XP Pro.  So I spent all day getting Pro on the damn thing.  The first time I tried it I got a bsod during the setup.  Turned out the XP disks don't have the SATA drivers on them.  Nor do the Dell disks (among other drivers not on the drivers disks.)

At one point I was websurfing at Nvidia in 640X480 mode looking for the video drivers that weren't on the system disks.

I was so ready to go home at 3:30 today...

On the bright side, after work I bought myself a Christmas   Present.

Got this so that I'll have some content for the thing.

Ouch.  Six months before it goes titsup.

Hmm by nebbish (2.00 / 0) #9 Fri Dec 07, 2007 at 06:35:55 AM EST
I've been told the opposite - couple of mates who work in IT recommend them as dead reliable.

Have you had bad experiences? I'm asking because this will be my first laptop and I want to keep my options open...

Last Acer PC by Breaker (4.00 / 1) #10 Fri Dec 07, 2007 at 06:48:24 AM EST
Was heavy, had crap battery life and died after ~2 years of incredibly light use (like, 7 hours / month).

Acer hardware support was abysmal; they had special hardware that needed their own custom drivers for it and did not support W2K as it was "cutting edge" (in 2002 FFS!).

So, in short, cheap as chips but crap.

Times have changed my friend. But, Acer battery lifetime is still not the best.

And it was a heavy mother as well as having a battery that lasted a couple of hours at best.

"I keep hitting the trackpad with the heal of my thumb, sending focus off god knows where."
I did same non-stop when I first got my lappy.  Thought it was only me.

Recovery disc.  Been half a year since I got my laptop and still have to make it.  I dont see why they dont include a disc like they use to.

I hope you do some drop tests before the warranty runs out.  They can take abit of a beating, I'll have to post a pic of my old laptop to prove it.

I'm getting a choice of XP and Vista by nebbish (2.00 / 0) #8 Fri Dec 07, 2007 at 06:31:54 AM EST
Fella who's selling me the laptop recommends XP though.

I don't like the sound of Vista. Apparently it bombards you with security messages and that does my nut. Haven't tried it yet though.

Depends what you're doing. by hulver (4.00 / 1) #11 Fri Dec 07, 2007 at 07:14:54 AM EST
If you run a program as administrator, it pops up a security warning. Other than that it's been fairly quiet.

You can turn it off as well.

The thing that I'm finding pretty annoying, as that to get all the stuff I had on XP Pro (like a web server), I'd have to upgrade to "Ultimate" edition. Makes it a bit crap for developing.

Same with XP Home vs Pro by Cloaked User (2.00 / 0) #15 Fri Dec 07, 2007 at 07:02:31 PM EST
It's one of the reasons why I upgrade or build from scratch rather than buying off the shelf if possible - I get to choose exactly what goes in to the machine, including the OS.

User Access Control by hulver (2.00 / 0) #18 Mon Dec 10, 2007 at 08:19:11 AM EST
It's the bit in Vista where the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.

So, right click on a file, choose rename. Type the new name in and windows will pop up a box saying "Are you sure you wanted to rename that file?"
