so i'll type Update [2007-11-15 10:48:25 by StackyMcRacky]: bossman is not answering my calls. He is either not in the office, or not wanting to deal with me (he /always/ answers his phone, even in meetings). I left a message...but I am still going in tomorrow to clean out my desk. If he doesn't call me back, then I will just leave a note on his desk. no more dumb emotions, I'm done with it all.

I have this problem where I can't get back to sleep when I wake up in the middle of the night.  It's the main reason I'm so damn tired all the time.

The dude has happily been sleeping in the bassinet for 3 nights now.  I'll admit it - I miss him being in the bed.  I loved waking up and looking at him.  I also loved snuggling him all the time.  He's getting so big, so fast I feel like I only have a limited time where I can snuggle him without resistance.  On a good note, moving him out of the bed has been far less painful than we thought it would be.

Later this morning I will call my boss and resign.  Part of me dreads that he'll give me crap for it, but a bigger part of me dreads he won't say a word.

clock set up our new improved intarweb access system this evening.  We can now print, access our iTunes library, back up our laptops, and play music all wirelessly.  Woo hoo!

We have so many LEDs lit up in this house, we practically don't need lamps any longer.

The lovely folks at Comcast decided to up our internet bill by freaking $10/mo!!  Fuckers.  I called customer service to complain, but the dude in India didn't give a rat's ass.  I will call again, and see if I can get somebody who knows English and can speak outside of a script.  $62/mo is highway robbery.  I wish we could get DSL.

COMING SOON: Babylon 5 discussion diary!  I finished the series on Monday! (excluding movies)

I hit the farmer's market again this week.  Good lord the fruits and veggies there are cheap as hell.  Last week my Timbuk 2 large cargo tote was totally full, and my cost was only $9.  This week it was almost as full and cost me $6 (it seems green beans are more expensive than other items).  The trick now is to cook more vegeterian style foods.  I need to do some reading on that type of cooking.

clock's mother is coming to town for a few weeks.  She couldn't stay away from the dude any longer.  I knew there was no way she'd last until January!  I have a few projects in mind while she's here, so it will be a productive time for me.

The dude makes funny noises in his sleep.  Lots of squeaks and little cries.  He's so cute.

The dog must be feeling sick again as she didn't eat dinner.  I hate it when she skips meals - her stomach growls loudly all night long.  Quite annoying.  I like to think that one day she'll quit grazing on crap outside, but I know that won't happen.  It would be nice if she ate something and got sick immediately - a little cause and effect would help.

I hear rustling of the froggy-leg diaper kind coming from the other room.  I should go check it out.

On resigning. by Breaker (3.83 / 6) #1 Thu Nov 15, 2007 at 04:57:52 AM EST
Fuck 'em.  You're quitting, remember?  It makes no odds what they say; you're still not going to continue working there.

I wouldn't even do it by phone; either post a letter or send an email.  Short and sweet:

Dear $BOSS
Please be advised as of today $date I tender my resignation.

Mad love,
Stacky.

DONE!

i still have to clean out my desk and return a bunch of stuff to them...like the keys to the server room that nobody knows i have.

it will feel so good to be done with them.

Or at least be sure to get anything important.

Don't worry about returning things to them. If they want them, they can ask. If they don't ask, they don't want them.

I move out the really important stuff by StackyMcRacky (2.00 / 0) #29 Fri Nov 16, 2007 at 10:08:49 AM EST
before I was placed on bedrest.

The rest is just stuff.

I will return their stuff, because I don't want to be accused of anything foul - I have keys to server rooms, wiring closets, etc.  I'll just drop the stuff off at one of the admin assistant's desks to cover my ass.

Provide a written inventory and have them sign it. Otherwise you may as well keep it; if they intend to treat you with good faith it won't matter either way, and if they don't anything short of a paper trail won't mean shit.

When I've resigned, I've done so over a beer or a cup of coffee.

Still get invited to the odd ex-work do, AKA MONKEYMAD PISHED FOR FREE!!!LOLLERSKATEZ!!!

But then, I suppose that's the difference between working for large and small companies.

Good luck to you by Linus Trollvalds (2.00 / 0) #2 Thu Nov 15, 2007 at 06:56:28 AM EST
just remember not to burn any bridges with your current employer because you'll need references for your future employer later.

As far as dealing with Comcast and other ISPs that use Help Desks in India, just tell them that your bill is too high, and if they give you some script that refuses to help you, just say "We'll I got a better offer from $BigBell phone company for DSL at $14.00 a month" where $BigBell is your local telephone company like AT&T, Verizon, etc. That might trigger their "Discounted Rate" script or get you with contact to someone else who can offer you a discounted rate. You see $BigBell companies usually offer that $14 a month rate for new customers, and you might get $5 or more discounted off your Comcast rate if they think you might switch to another ISP. It is all in the art of the deal, and if it works for Donald Trump, it should work for you as well.

Actually your current employer you could say that $Competitor offers better benefits, and a larger salary, and would give you less stress and they might make you a counter offer and decide not to give you such a hard time. Unless you just want time off of working to take care of that little dude, in which case tell your current employer that you want to take emergency family leave, and then you can leave work but keep your benefits, and won't have to deal with your jerky boss, but screw them anyway because they cannot fire you but the government says that you can take family leave to take care of a relative. Just a thought.

Do what you think is best, and again good luck.

Either one.

Remember that the company has no loyalty to you, even if they pretend to. Your resigning is just business, just like them laying you off would have just been business. There's really no need to have any emotional attachment to that action. Read back over you diaries on work stuff. I bet resigning will give you a feeling of elation after doing that.

But they pay you to bust your arse.

Seriously - as long as they paid you then they held up their end of the bargain.

Plus, and I'm not saying you weren't the shining star there, but I'll wager most people think they're the glue holding the company together and the idiots running the company just don't see it etc etc. Just read some blogs on the Internet if you don't believe me :)

sort of by StackyMcRacky (2.00 / 0) #18 Thu Nov 15, 2007 at 10:10:18 AM EST
i was hired in to do one job, but ended up doing another.  my compensation was fair for that original position but the job i ended up doing should have been paid much more than i was making.  and then they morphed me into another position, which should have been paid still more.  when your vendors tell you to quit because you're being severly underpaid, that says something.  also, just to beat the horse one more time, the 2 informal job offers i've gotten in the last week pay $15k more than what i'm being paid now for less responsibility than what i was carrying.

and my paltry "cost of living" increases never even kept up with the cost of living.

i never thought i was the glue holding the organization together, i just played my part and played it very well.  it takes a team effort to run a place as big as mine.  mgmt fired everybody who was the glue last year.  and yes, those people WERE the glue as things have been literally falling apart ever since they were all canned. if only one or two had been let go, things would have been OK, but ALL of them was a very bad idea.

the bottom line is this company never used to be so crappy.  things changed, and it all went down hill.  all of the old timers who survived the firing ended up quitting.  i'm one of the very last to go (i quit job hunting because i was pregnant).

how much bandwidth do ya'll suck down ? Do you run VPN into work ? Do your TOS allow it (probably not, at the rate you are paying) ? Host any services locally ?

$62 is what I'd think middle of the road, depending on use and what not.

it's high by StackyMcRacky (2.00 / 0) #12 Thu Nov 15, 2007 at 09:55:53 AM EST
under Time Warner it was only $50/mo, and DSL runs from $20/mo to $40/mo depending on what speed you want.  i don't see what I'm getting with Comcast that should make it so expensive.

They want $59 per month for internet cable where I live and there are no other providers (no DSL companies provide service in my area yet - how screwed is that) which is why I'm still on a $16 per month dial up account at home. I'll be fucked before I pay 60 bucks a month for the Internet.

Plus with a super duper T900 connection at work I can download anything I need at work.

WTF? I pay £10 a month. by ambrosen (2.00 / 0) #8 Thu Nov 15, 2007 at 09:41:24 AM EST
Although that only gets me 1GB a month. That's on my mobile phone, so only three times dialup speed with the hardware I've got. Otherwise it'd be 3Mb/s. Normal price would be part of a call bundle (all UK calls+DSL+phone line @ £20 a month or international calls for an extra £2 or so)

Or for reliable service you'd be looking at £15-£20 just for the DSL.

I'm continually surprised at how similar things are to the UKian situation in Europe, and how dissimilar in USia.

DSL by Bob Abooey (2.00 / 0) #11 Thu Nov 15, 2007 at 09:55:23 AM EST
DSL pricing usually starts around $29.99 here in the Clevland burbs. In fact I just looked up prices at SBC/ATT and they're offering 3 Mbps for $24.99 and 6 MBPS for $34.99 per month.

DC area can have 640k for $15 to $20 by wumpus (2.00 / 0) #26 Thu Nov 15, 2007 at 08:11:19 PM EST
with higher rates for bandwidth that wouldn't be delievered down my pipe (I found out I paid a year for several Mbs while getting 640k). ~$50 would buy your fiber and a good chunk of the phone bill.

But we have absolutely no TV reception without cable and when we have anywhere from three to seven computers connected to teh Intarweb at any one given time depending on who's at home, well dial-up just wouldn't cut it.

I'm not saying this as a Clearwire customer, I'm saying this as a former employee of a Clearwire reseller. You get decent bandwidth at first, then after a couple of months or so they throttle you down. Also, they do more traffic shaping than Comcast, so don't even think about running P2P.
