Iwao Takamoto, the US animator who created cartoon dogs Scooby-Doo and Muttley, has died aged 81.

He will be greatly missed.

However, if he was also responsible for Scrappy Doo, it isn't all bad.

Scrappy doo wasn't the worst. by ObviousTroll (2.00 / 0) #1 Tue Jan 09, 2007 at 04:18:15 AM EST
That lame show with Vincent Price and "real" ghosts was the worst.

It broke the fundamental rule of Scooby Doo!

It was an American tradition, like fathers chasing kids around with power tools.

You mean that there must be a real (human) villain operating the levers or in costume?

As in "There's No Such Thing As Ghosts".

I was really upset when I realized they'd broken that assumption.

Scooby Doo was recommended by the Skeptics for that very reason.

Reveals universal loathing for Scrappy. The most positive comment received was 'brand dilution.'

According to Wikipedia, Scrappy saved Scooby Doo from cancellation, though I can't guess how.

Any refresh of the series would have done the same. If they had introduced a new human character the show would have done even better.
