I know middle class inflation is real by jump the ladder (4.00 / 4) #3 Fri Sep 08, 2006 at 03:02:49 AM EST
my trouser size has gone up by 4" since becoming a well paid contractor. Shame it hasn't done the same to my knob :)

Definitions of middle class by nebbish (4.00 / 2) #4 Fri Sep 08, 2006 at 03:20:41 AM EST
Seem a bit strange to me. School fees? Surely that's upper class - and if not, what is?

Middle class in right wing newspapers by jump the ladder (4.00 / 1) #6 Fri Sep 08, 2006 at 03:44:12 AM EST
Means the class that the well paid columnists and senior journos belong to hence their obsession with private schools and £20,000 a year live in nannies.

It's not too unreasonable by squigs (2.00 / 0) #7 Fri Sep 08, 2006 at 03:55:11 AM EST
Private school for two kids is within the budget for a two working parent family.  Income can easily be £60000 per year and day school fees for the children will typically be less than £10000 each.

It's a substantial chunk of income but definitely affordable.

Did you see by R Mutt (4.00 / 1) #9 Fri Sep 08, 2006 at 04:50:07 AM EST
The NHS Blog Doctor "Should Sammy go to medical school?" post and discussion. "You'll earn 100,000 per year, but you'll never be rich".

£100k by jump the ladder (2.00 / 0) #11 Fri Sep 08, 2006 at 04:58:50 AM EST
Isn't rich, it's comfortable especially in London and the South East. See what you can buy for £400K in a nice area, not a lot.

Unlike City IT contractors though by R Mutt (2.00 / 0) #12 Fri Sep 08, 2006 at 05:17:49 AM EST
GPs tend to be spread out through the country. And Dr Crippen is married to another doctor on a similar income: I suspect the majority of married doctors are in two-income families.

It is upper class by DullTrev (4.00 / 1) #13 Fri Sep 08, 2006 at 06:06:09 AM EST

But upper class is a desparately uncool thing to be, so they redefine themselves as middle class.

Anyway, I feel sorry for poor Oliver - consigned to a media studies degree already.
