Chatted with an old friend I hadn't really contacted much in the past 6 or so years besides very occasional random IM conversations. Good to catch up. He's going to Korea to teach English now that he's graduated. That's what you get for majoring in comp lit. Will keep in far more touch. Also got the contact info for a number of mutual friends. Very important. The inspiration for this was looking at my buddy list and noting a name which didn't correspond to anybody I knew but which had been there, unexplained, for 7 years. I had a vague suspicion it was connected to this one girl, but it wasn't her. I mentioned this to another girl I know, a mutual friend [not the bit about suspecting who it was related to], and she was like, I'll IM the person for you and see. Turned out to be the mother of the first girl. Inspired me to IM some people on my list who I hadn't talked to for years but actually knew who they were.
I read Dan Brown's Digital Fortress this week because I found it on the ground somewhere for free. Published in 1998. I figured since I knew about cryptography, I'd see whether his other work was as off-base as his work about church history. Short answer: it was. Interestingly enough, he threw in some jabs at the Catholic Church for no apparent reason. The male professor character was also essentially identical to the other one, though Brown did not need to make up a field for this one.
Aaaand my call just got disconnected. Bah! So now I'm posting the diary.
