So toasted-cheese.com is having their quarterly writing contest next weekend. This time around (as usual, for all and spring equinox "Three Cheers and a Tiger" contests), you get 48 hours starting at 5pm eastern US time on Friday afternoon.

Details are here, and come 5pm on the 22nd, the details and the prompt will be posted at Just the Place for a Snark.

I'm one of the judges this year. Sharpen up your word processors, clear your schedules, and stand by.... to WRITE!

I have a brilliant idea for a short story, and i'm not sure if I should make it into a WFC or NoNo or something else.

How big an idea? by ana (2.00 / 0) #2 Sat Sep 16, 2006 at 07:59:44 AM EST
The wordcount limits for these contests (wfc's, Three Cheers and a Tiger, etc.) tend to be 2000-3000 words, which is pretty short and (one hopes) sweet and to the point. If you want to ramble a bit, have more than a couple characters, look at things from more than one angle, perhaps a NaNo. Though I'd consult your other half before committing to 50+ hours in a month. And it helps to have a writing buddy, or at least a daily reader, for a project like that.

Last time a tried a NoNo, she was disappointed that I gave up before it was finished but my story idea was out of steam.  This time I have a pretty good outline for the entire story in my head so I'd only be limited by time not by lack of inspiration (I think).

The story is going to be largely a internal monologue of a morally conflicted person in an interesting situation, interpersed with short bursts of dialogue with other characters which serves primarily to lead to more internal monologue (and to keep the reader from falling asleep).  And then finishes with a dramatic plot twist that ties together the entire story in an (hopefully) delightfully unexpected way.

I don't know if I could do all that in 3K words because the more details I give in the story the bigger the payoff of the plot twist will be.  But maybe it'll give me a place to start which I could then flesh out for the NoNo in a flagrant violation of theor rules.

other considerations by Kellnerin (2.00 / 0) #4 Sun Sep 17, 2006 at 08:41:33 PM EST
WFCs and the Toasted Cheese contests tend to have an associated theme (the TC ones also have a genre stipulation). Ideas can be adapted to fit themes, of course, but some themes will be more of a stretch than others, and may or may not be a disservice to your original concept.

IMO, WFCs are good for the fun of writing a story for its own sake, and maybe getting some quick feedback from Husi people. TC contests have a monetary prize (as long as you're not boycotting Amazon) but little or no feedback, though you'd be able to shop the story around to other venues if it isn't chosen to appear in the e-zine. Both are exercises in working within limitations you probably wouldn't have chosen for yourself, and surprising yourself with what happens. NaNo is more flexible, and mainly for the insanity of doing it at all and for the few people you share it with. Also, over on Psych-E diva runs occasional contests with no word limit and very open themes and the prize money is actually better than TC. Voting is via modsub and, at least last time, stories are posted whether they won or not (winner to FP, other entries to section).
