I'd post this whether hulver told me to or not.

Attention crispyduck infidel: A lesson

A good idea for a MFC

Planet Xena?!?!? Why not planet Marvin?

Raging debate at "work": Longest properly formed Starbucks order.
Current candidate: Iced grande in a venti cup half-caf triple 2 pump mint 1 pump vanilla soy extra hot extra foamy latte

The cable company caught up to me. I downsized my service months and months ago to be only the over-the-air channels and they never removed most of the stuff I was getting. I haven't been watching tv at all, so I'm not sure when it happened, but most of the extra channels I was getting were gone as of last night. Brief panic when Channel 11 wasn't available, but it was later in the night, so all is good. Then again, as pledge week has been extended throughout much of the year, it wouldn't be much of a loss. For some reason, they took off the CSI/Star Trek/Ultimate Fighting channel, but left the whiners and the screemers. It's ComCASTIC!

Why not get rid of cable totally? I live in a brick canyon and rabbit ears don't work. Well, they sort of work, I can get two stations: Fox and 44. Besides, it's only $9/mo and include NECN and C-SPAN.

Our long national nightmare is over. Well, as least as it relates to me and my DSL line.

Result: all fixed.

The Covad guy came last night and had the problem diagnosed within about 10 minutes and fixed in about 20.

Verdict: Verizon totally botched the wiring. Wires were cross connected and other assorted mess. Basically, they had the DSL line cross wired to the voice line through two of the jacks. That means is was the guy who ran the new wire didn’t hook it up right. And the guy that came after him didn’t bother to even look at it.

Verizon: You owe me for a $199 service call.

I have the option to send the new modem back, pay for it ($99), or commit to another year. I committed.

So I came home from work last night and what do I find? The nice, big, healthy 10-inch tree in front of my house has been ripped out by the roots. It, along with another sickly tree, were cut down by the city while another wholly diseased tree was left standing.

Explanation by the city: "I don’t know. It was scheduled for removal." (a direct quote.)

Just another in the long and growing list of reasons why I don’t want to live here any more.

Trees

The explanation, that they will never admit, is they got the wrong tree. There are only four on the street -- two diseased, two healthy. What are the odds they could get the right ones?

I joined a gym today. It was sort of a spur-of-the-moment thing. A bit on the expensive side. Sort of. But not really. The price ($70/mo) includes everything, and it has a pool. The last gym I belonged to charged extra for everything including classes and towels. It'll give me something to do when the weather's to crappy to ride. Plus they have a cycling studio and spin classes that might help my riding. I also need to work on things other than my legs. Here's hoping my back holds out.

I had a couple of other things but they're on my laptop which is in my backpack and I don't feel like getting it out.

So there.

I bought some push bike stuff today by georgeha (4.00 / 1) #1 Wed Aug 16, 2006 at 03:18:36 PM EST
a bar end mirror, so I can keep an eye on ten year old without having to swivel my body and dangerously destablize my bike, and a chain tool, since I can't find my high school one. I have an old 27 inch road bike that needs a replacement chain. Sadly, 27 inch is just a bit much for me, I may need to wear heels to ride it.

Are those really pancakes ? by sasquatchan (4.00 / 1) #2 Wed Aug 16, 2006 at 03:27:53 PM EST
They look more like crepes to me. (very thin, fill out the pan, etc)

And he didn't add any oil to the batter. Is there shortening/oil solids in the powder mix? (regardless of using a non-stick/teflon pan, should add some oil to the batter)

And he used an egg beater to mix them ? And a whisk ? wtf, man.. A good fork does just the trick, and is easier to clean than both the whisk and beaters.

Though, if he is making crepes, then maybe that justifies a different prep (blend more air into the mix, etc).

And if they are crepes, I highly endorse the nutella on them. Mmm tasty. And since it's supposed to be AM, can't bring out the Grand Marnier, yet.

Didn't read the intro, eh? by ad hoc (2.00 / 0) #5 Wed Aug 16, 2006 at 04:39:17 PM EST
I live in Scotland, these are British pancakes which are like Crépes, to clear up the confusion. Lemon and Sugar is very popular on pacakes here.

One should only use a fork to mix. Overmixing causes rubbery pancakes.

Covad by ucblockhead (4.00 / 1) #3 Wed Aug 16, 2006 at 03:33:40 PM EST
I've always had good luck with Covad. Though last time, they had to have Speakeasy bump my service down a notch because of noise on the SBC controlled line that SBC denied existed.

When they added the phone lines for my new addition it took lots of extra effort because it turned out that SBC had totally botched the original wiring.

Anyone that orders coffee and uses more than four syllables should be shot on sight.

The gym I belong too is way to hoity-toity for my liking, but it's really nice and the pools (4 of them in the summer, 2 in the winter) are empty in the early AM when I swim.  It's 100/month, including the 10$ minimum at the cafe, which is usually me buying 5 bottles of gatorade on the last day of the month.

I've only ever done one spinning class despite being at gyms which have had free classes for almost two years.

We'll see how it goes by ad hoc (4.00 / 1) #13 Thu Aug 17, 2006 at 10:11:47 AM EST
I signed up for a year. It's a huge place: 33,000 sq. ft. and they seem to have at least one of everything. They have a huge room of aerobic things (various kinds of stair climbing, eliptical somthings, and skiing things), each with its own individually controlled DirecTV. A very large cycling room with, probably 40 or so good quality stationary bikes (NTS: measure the road bike so I can duplicate the fit). An enormous room of various kinds of weight lifting things (pins, plates & resistance). Several "empty" rooms for yoga, pilates, stretching, aerobics and like classes. Plus a 4-lane lap pool.

Very nice place, really.

This replaces (and greatly expands) a gym that used to be on the same site. That one was primarily a gay gym, but now that the neighborhood has changed so much and BUMC/BMChas increased in size many times over, it's about ½ gay and ½ people in scrubs.

Planet Xena by jimgon (4.00 / 1) #16 Fri Aug 18, 2006 at 08:06:11 AM EST
Sounds like a porno.  "Insertion to Planet Xena"

Actually they're probably going to name it Persephone.

a personal trainer (unless you are able yourself) to work out a specific program for your back might actually improve your back problems. Weightlifting isn't only for juiceheads, done correctly and within reasonable amounts it's good for you body :-)
