Funnily enough there's some entertaining tracks and hills around there, including the Eskdale Trail. I found this route which actually mentions starting in the Muncaster Castle car park.

This route also mentions Hardknott Pass, surely one of the most entertaining roads in the UK. I love the photo at the bottom of this page.
