Diary

I don't think I really have anything important to say but I feel compelled to make a diary entry today.

Movie

Friday night, Filip and I and some other friends went to see The DaVinci Code.  The place was packed but the audience was polite and we had good seats despite showing up late.  I liked the book and I liked the movie but I take them both with a grain of salt.  (Inflammatory remarks about the Catholic Church redacted.)

Moving

I reserved a small trailer at a nearby U-Haul store so that Filip and I could move the last of his stuff to my house.  The entire thing went off flawlessly and took very little time.  A bonus was that the staff at U-Haul were very professional and pleasant despite being very busy, and one of the guys there was pretty damn hot.

Now all that's left for Fillip's move is to do some cleaning at his old apartment.  The only things left there now are trashbags and cleaning supplies.  Filip's taking care of this himself sometime this week.

The only real down-side to having all of Filip's stuff in my house is that everything smells of stale cigarette smoke.  I hosed some stuff down with Febreze but that only worked for a few minutes.  I suspect that periodic liberal application of Febreze and opening up the windows to ventilate the house will help.

House

Filip is re-finishing some of the furniture from his apartment.  So far he has painted two kitchen chairs and he's done a fantastic job.  Now he has a coffee table and two small dressers to re-finish.  I'm glad he has something active to keep him occupied before summer school starts.

On Saturday I fertilized the lawn, re-potted some plants, and generally puttered around in the yard for a few hours.  Things are coming along nicely and all of my plants seem to be thriving.  I'm concerned about keeping up with watering the lawn as the season progresses.  I have more or less thought out a semi-permanent automated lawn sprinkler system for both the front and back yards.  I just need to buy some more garden hose and some more sprinklers.

Food

Please note my recent post containing a Chocolate and Coffee ice cream recipe.  Yes, it really is as good as it seems it would be.  We fired up the grill last night and had grilled portabellas and peppers and some sort of beef.  My Dad has passed on to me the knowledge of how to get a charcoal grill started and hot in the least amount of time.  Since it's grilling season almost all year long here in Austin, I plan on getting a lot of mileage, so to speak, out of that knowledge.

if you've got special fire knowledge, you're duty bound to share it. Mainly because I'm curious what constitutes "started and hot in the least amount of time" for charcoal.

Anyway, I haven't seen an answer to blixy's 'lectric or human powered icecream maker question.. Got those bulging forarms from turing the crank ?

First, you've gotta have a "chimney starter."  I would go into more detail on this but look for it here instead.

Then, you have to have an easy-to-start heat source.  I think there are commercially available options but my Dad made some for me using a simple recipe.  You just mix sawdust with melted paraffin and/or candle wax.  The procurement of sawdust and paraffin and the heating and mixing of the two are left as an exercize for the reader.  I have no idea what the proportions would be but you want to make a thick-ish paste.  Then you fill small wax-paper drinking cups like these half-way with the molten wax and sawdust concoction.  I'm talking about using the flat-bottom cups, not the pointy ones.  Also you could use little disposable paper cups like you might find in someone's bathroom.

Finally, you set one or two of these fire starters on the bottom of your grill and light the paper cups on fire.  Then, the "chimney starter," full of charcoal is set atop the burning fire starters.  The charcoal on bottom will catch on fire quickly and eventually you'll have a flaming tower of charcoal.  Once the charcoal on the very top begins to turn white, carefully dump the charcoal into the grill, then continue your normal grilling procedures.

need to do a BBQ soon.  SOON!  I got the greatest BBQ book ever from my dad, the one done by cooks illustrated.  I'll find it on amazon and link to it soon-ish.
