enjoy watching Stephen Colbert but calling him a hero might be a little stretching for me.

good American one of few, and go against Bush like few will dare, which does requires balls.  But I still wouldn't call him a hero.  He should get a prize for making Bush's face turn red.

The guy who booked him to speak is the hero, and probably dead for doing so.

The troll runs back into his cave.

In case someone wants here it is.

    the whitehouse correspondent's dinner.

Where he spent half an hour criticizing the current administration while standing 10 feet from Bush himself. That takes balls.

See http://www.metafilter.com/mefi/51292 for various links to the video.

dude, that was some serious fucking shit. by rmg (2.00 / 0) #4 Mon May 01, 2006 at 02:52:13 PM EST
i liked colbert before, but god damn. that was fucking awesome.

i mean, i'm no stranger to ripping into people in a situation where everyone is unanimously against me, but doing it in person when that everyone includes the president and half the press takes a serious bad ass. a fine piece of hooliganry. and he had some quality material -- even though frankly, that kind of stuff writes itself.

and check out the right wingers whining about it. "he's not funny." where have i seen that?

    ATTENTION FORGETFUL INFIDEL(S) by theantix (4.00 / 1) #6 Mon May 01, 2006 at 02:59:57 PM EST
They do a White House Correspondent's dinner every single year.  Every single year they make fun of the president AND EVERY YEAR THE ENTIRE WORLD FORGETS THAT IT HAPPENED JUST THE SAME LAST YEAR.

This is not new, this is not great, this is not wonderful.  Stephen Colbert is a very funny man and his satire is bang-on -- and he did his job at the dinner perfectly, his job being to make fun of the president.  Next year, they will do it again, and next year the entire world will forget and think the world has changed.

It was pretty much like a less funny version of his show, with the only difference being that the President was sitting a few feet away.  Move along now.

Really, if you've seen an episode of the Colbert Report you've already seen most of that speech already.  There are some good quips that might be worth downloading it for, but it's not mind-blowing by any means.

The president wasn't the target of most of Colbert's satire. If you limit your attention to the Bush jokes, then I agree, it doesn't have much of an impact. And obviously, nobody (except rmg) thinks Stephen Colbert changed the world, so you are sort of beating up a strawman here.

DailyKos has had multiple recommended diaries talking about Colbert for days now. Which is what led to my satirical excitement, along with the Thank You Stephen Colbert site. That said, DailyKos is a strawman, so...

I'm not staying he doesn't have fans and people overreacting to the performance (rmg's skewering of them is on point), but I'd be surprised if any of those gushing diarists suggest that Colbert's standup routine changed the world, as theantix implies.

I didn't actually read any of the gushing, so you may be right to draw a distinction between being very happy that he said something vs thinking anything will change because of it.

"I watched the whole show and I was deeply offended for my country, the President and the military. Stephen Colbert proved beyond a doubt that liberals are worthless human beings, a danger to all of our freedom and lack any sense of decency. Their contributions and value to the country are nil." - Tom Wegmann, Seattle, Wash.
