Last weekend, with the result of the match between Middlesbrough and West Ham United decided, the semi-final stage of the F.A. Cup was officially concluded.

This round had a number of highs and lows, and their impacts upon the HuSi F.A. Cup Competition were devastating. For good or ill, eight of our most cynical and opportunistic HuSians met their demise during this encounter. Disbelieving Ewoks are breakdancing with glee at their disappearance. Yub-nub.

Official Semi-final Results

  • West Ham United beat Middlesbrough [1 - 0]
  • Liverpool beat Chelsea [2 - 1]

The Final [to be played to a conclusion at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium]

  • Liverpool versus West Ham United (15:00 13/05/06)

and the HuSian in the winning position could change numerous times during the match. I think you've just about got the best choice of score, but TPD has the vast bulk of time for the winning goal if nobody's right. All the guesses have a decent chance, though (with H0ffm4n a bit behind the others).

Damn by Dr H0ffm4n (4.00 / 1) #4 Fri Apr 28, 2006 at 04:21:00 AM EST
Hadn't thought goal time intervals would be the decider. Else I'd have picked a later time.

Rules question by TurboThy (4.00 / 1) #3 Fri Apr 28, 2006 at 02:58:57 AM EST
If the game goes into overtime, will the score of the match be 0-0 (or whatever the scoreline was at the end of 90 minutes), or will it be the score after 120 minutes? Bookies in Denmark rules the former, YMMV.

The score by yicky yacky (2.00 / 0) #7 Fri Apr 28, 2006 at 06:30:23 AM EST

will be whatever it is at the very end of the game (even if that is 120 minutes and it's 8-7 on penalties). If it goes to extra time, the scores will have been tied at that point anyway, so nobody should get unfairly disadvantaged.

There is an inelegant ambiguity there but, given what was written in the original article, and the fact that some people (e.g. Phage) intentionally (and quite cunningly) picked first-winner's-goal times in extra time, it's the fairest and most consistent way of doing it.

Aha by TurboThy (4.00 / 1) #9 Fri Apr 28, 2006 at 07:24:13 AM EST
Just to be anal (I have no stake in this having been eliminated from the competition, I just like unambiguous rules), since the interval from 0:00 - 1:00 is the first minute, goals scored "in the period from minute 11 to minute 18" is from 10:00 to 17:59 on the match clock, right?

I hadn't seen the end points were inclusive; "in the period from minute 11 to minute 18" should be 10:00 to 18:59.

No / Maybe / Yes / I think so by yicky yacky (2.00 / 0) #11 Fri Apr 28, 2006 at 07:40:40 AM EST

Fencepost errors notwithstanding, the official timing for this competition is taken from the official BBC report, so if the scores read:

Liverpool 2 - 0 West Ham United
Riise 8'
Alonso 67'

... those will count as minute 8 and minute 67 as chosen for the competition. I think the BBC does exactly as you say and indexes from 1-90 so this will be the case. Whichever way it does it, the BBC match reports don't operate in fractional times, so you can consider the minutes to be sampling 'bins' if you like. See Rule 7.iv for the official version.

Unlucky by yicky yacky (4.00 / 1) #8 Fri Apr 28, 2006 at 06:54:01 AM EST

But Liverpool versus Chelsea wasn't exactly a game where I was cheering for either of the two teams.

Muahahahaha by IEFBR14 (4.00 / 1) #6 Fri Apr 28, 2006 at 05:44:57 AM EST
I've got to say that TPD's scoreline looks most likely, but Liverpool sure have kept a lot of clean sheets this season...

Minutes 19 to 34, eh?
