I'm also looking forward to our real vacation at the end of July, at the shore. I need to mp3 some Springsteen, it was a custom of mine at one time to play Born to Run as I went over the Ben Franklin bridge, leaving PA for Jersey. This will be the first time I've done it in a vehicle with balls though, all the other times it was in an underpowered 78 4 banger boat. I'm looking forward to intimidating compact cagers.
I just appreciate Bruce much more when I'm in Jersey, even if the highway 9 I'll be driving on is a more southern stretch than the one he's familiar with.
I didn't realize i'd need the $400 deposit so soon, it's a lot to come up with when I'm living hand to mouth and don't have my tax refund yet. So, I'm submitting reimbursements for my medical expenses and ebaying stuff, check out my auctions, surely you know someone who needs a working Dilbert M&M dispenser.
I just finished Brothers in Arms, the story of the 761st Tank Battalion in WWII. Since the US Army was not intergrated in WWII, amny ambitious blacks were sent to this new tank battalion. They were never intended to fight, it was mostly made to placate Eleanor Roosevelt, but when the Shermans became easy targets for German guns in Normandy, Patton took any replacements he could get. I found it to be the most complete picture of fighting, living and dying in a tank that I have read yet.
The sick part is that since they trained in the South, they were targets of severe racism before and after fighting in ETO. For some of them, including famed NCAA football player Jackie Robinson, the southern white law men and white MPs were a greater threat than the Germans. There was also strong circumstantial evidence that paperwork for promotions, recognition and medals was lost or misplaced by the largely southern officer corps.
The happy ending is that the Army became officially integrated in 1948, and that whole conquering of Nazi Germany thing too.
We had a few skids of paper delivered the other day, and I thought, wow, that's a lot of paper. I was going to do a poll on how much precut paper you've seen, but I realized that while it was a lot of paper, it was really only about half an Office Max full. So, no poll.
We've had a lot of visitors lately, too many for my introverted self. Wednesday night Mrs. Ha was walking the dog and ran into an old nieghbor (who moved down the street) who had locked himself out of the car. He was drunk, but he had just closed gotten a commission check on a six figure sale, so I reckon I would be drunk too. We let him call a few people, charge up his mobile, and then he left , but it was past 11, past my bedtime.
Yesterday we had Irish_girl and her baby_to_be_daddy, laid_back_guy. I'm trying not to care or get caught up in their deal, for it would be extremely frustrating. Irish_girl has a job offer contingent on having a reliable car. She's been shopping for a few weeks, no car, and needs the car Monday. We were supposed to look at a Subaru last night (otherwise I would have worked out), but she has some deal with her roommies cakemen who never comes through with a car. So, instead, we talked and chatted and had pizze, but didn't get a car. I can the shit heading towards the fan, she won't get a job, she'll move back in with her mom, and laid_back_guy might see his baby once a week, if he can expend the effort. Whatever.
In happier news, I have some chocolate covered macadamian nuts from Oz, a gift from a visiting engineer who belongs to a once partially owned furrin subsidiary. I'll have to PM cam, phage, and creo, they probably know him.
