Mind you, to whatever extent it is possible, most of us have been innoculated against goatse itself. But there's still alot of crap out there that would make me personally claw my eyes out...

As you may have gathered from my previous diary, or, if you have been lurking around K5's diary section in the past 6 months or so, I am on a quest to do the impossible.

A database that will make porn searchable in ways before thought impossible. Or if not impossible, then just creepy and pointless. Ok, so mostly just those last two.

Anyway, the beta website's progress continues to inch forward. And I'm about at the point that I'll allow a few people to start uploading pictures, pictures which the free users will later have to do manual data entry on.

It occurs to me, that people might be more willing to do this data entry, though, if they can be somewhat assured that they'll only see things within their comfort zone. For instance, as a hetero male myself, I have little interest in seeing gay guys. Even if it means a free account, I'm willing to pass that up, if I keep having to do data entry on such pictures.

So, I've been thinking that maybe asking the person who uploads to do some -very- quick sorting would be something we could all appreciate. Just what things would you not want to see, if it were up to you?

So far, it's pretty clear that there are a few basic categories here. Some will only want to see softcore images, like what Playboy might show (and even this would need to be broken down into male/female). Others don't want to see gay stuff, or lesbian stuff (strange but true, mostly women in my experience). We should probably add bondage into that, or should we? I personally have no problem with seeing a girl tied up, just does nothing for me. And of course, the really nasty stuff that need not be named would get it's own.

In the functional sense, these would just be a few checkboxes sitting near the file input form on the webpage. (And flagrant mis-sorting things would be a bannable offense).

So, any thoughts?

First: Yeah, you definitely should let the uploaders do a little sorting so that the persons doing the final sorting don't get grossed out.

Also, I haven't seen your site or even heard of it before this, but if you can avoid an upload process that causes the user to select files one-by-one on an HTML form, I think you'll be better off.  If you can allow the upload of all files in a directory or a ctrl+click kind of thing, I think you'll be better off.

Finally, how are you dealing with copyright issues?

Well... by NoMoreNicksLeft (2.00 / 0) #2 Sat Feb 11, 2006 at 08:54:02 AM EST
Yeh, presorting things needs to be quick and painless, but without it I either have to force people to look at everything, which wouldn't go over well, or just not let people upload anything non-traditional... which defeats the purpose of a porn database, I think.

I'm going to do HTTP uploading at first... I don't need people uploading 10,000 pictures at a time, not yet anyway. If each only uploads a few of their best, it will still amount to many, many pictures in the aggregate.

I'm not sure how to allow bulk uploading yet. Perhaps FTP later on, or allowing people to upload zip files, not sure.

On copyright: I had sort of decided to ignore them, for now. Keep the userbase small, the subscriber base too, for that matter. Don't let it be indexed by the search engines, rely on word-of-mouth for advertising. The chances of someone who owns a copyright stumbling across an image they recognize is pretty low.

My website has a few links back to the original K5 diaries, if interested. Note, there's no NSFW publically available on in right now, but that may change in the future.

Do you remember autopr0n? by TheophileEscargot (2.00 / 0) #3 Sat Feb 11, 2006 at 09:38:46 AM EST
Autopr0n is a defunct site now, created by a K5er. Was scoop-based I think: anyone could submit web porn, and it would automatically strip out popups and annoying entry pages. You could recommend or de-recommend stuff, and search by category. Quite useful. Um, I'm told by people who resort to this kind of appalling degradation of women.

But never tried it myself.

I'm not really sure how to describe what I have in mind, not easily. Reposting a 6 month old K5 diary seems lame. Though I had considered posting it the queue there, once I cleaned up some of the typos and what not.

Suffice it to say, if you can describe what the parameters are of the pictures you want to see, you can craft a SQL query that will return only those pictures.

Perhaps I should... by NoMoreNicksLeft (4.00 / 1) #5 Sat Feb 11, 2006 at 09:47:34 AM EST
Post a link to the registration page here? Anyone interested in a still mostly useless beta user account?

What if it was more like Netflix? by DesiredUsername (2.00 / 0) #6 Sat Feb 11, 2006 at 10:38:01 AM EST
I'm not sure most people would say, for instance, "I only like girls with eyes from #FFAA1B to #FFAA3F for hair color". Instead, just let people rate stuff. Then match those ratings against historical ratings and make recommendations based on similarity of profile.

And I'm not sure it's all that interesting. That's for finding something you might like, when you're not sure what you want to see. My idea is for finding -exactly- whatever it is your looking for, and nothing else.

Besides which, I'm not going to force people to use the RGB values, you know. There will be a frontend that is a little more basic and user-friendly than that.

I suggest checkboxes by debacle (2.00 / 0) #9 Sat Feb 11, 2006 at 11:14:54 AM EST
And also, make sure you allow (paying) users to save searches so that they can check for any new files.

I suggest illegal narcotics, for a period of no less than 12 years. That -might- erase the memory.

Transgendered porn is a bigger turn off to me than gay porn.
