A friend of mine's dream went up in smoke today.

http://cbs2chicago.com/topstories/local_story_281110429.html

He bought the church across from Harrah's and was remodeling it into a nightclub/concert venue...and now there's nothing left, barely even the shell.

His family have been the neighbors next to my parents' house since the year I was born....so they're kinda like family.  Mark, who is a few years younger than I am, wasn't even in town.  He was in Vegas lining up shows for March when the place would be ready.  Yes, they're insured...but still it's bad.  Half of downtown is blocked off because of the fire equipment (STILL-- and it's 15 hours later!) and they are bringing in demolition equipment, because the structure that is left is not stable.

I feel horrible about it...not that my feeling anything will change anything.  But, the tangible of his dream; his work; his life...is basically gone.  Yes, insurance will pay, things can and will happen, life will move forward (no one was even injured in this fire) but- there's still a loss.

Sadly, it can always get worse.

Very true.

There are a lot of positives to see here...but the smoke really hasn't cleared yet to really see them.  Ya know?

I've already thought of and talked with some of his family about options and possibilities to make this project still fly.  But, the investigators and the insurance men are the ones deciding things for now...then we move forward.

Oh! I'm so sorry! by greyrat (2.00 / 0) #2 Sun Oct 08, 2006 at 10:21:10 PM EST
My grand parents used to pick me up at the station in Joliet when I'd come from Kansas City to Monee visit them on the farm. I'm sure I've been by the church, but that was more that thirty years ago.

I also have to ask: Do y'all say "Joe-Lee-Et" or "Jolly-Et"?

Joe-lee-ett by reza (2.00 / 0) #3 Sun Oct 08, 2006 at 10:31:09 PM EST
Romeo(ville)'s girlfriend.

Yes, I am sure you would have seen this place had you come through the train station.  It's, at most, like 6 blocks (3 down and 3 over) from the station...and it stood there for like over a 100 years.

It was a beautiful building...I thought it looked like a gingerbread house with the brightly colored stained glass windows.

Kansas City to Joliet...that was a hellova train ride!  I'm guessing through St Louis?  I did the STL to JOL ride often enough and had my brain and butt numbed from sheer boredom (and uncomfortable Amtrack seats).  Add another 4 or 5 hours to that, and I'd probably be catatonic.

Do you still have family in Monee?

My grandparents used "Jolly-Et", by greyrat (2.00 / 0) #5 Sun Oct 08, 2006 at 11:18:11 PM EST
which is apparently the way the old Germanic people used to pronounce it. I've got nobody left in Monee. The farm is gone. It used to be in here, but they sold the land -- hell more than twenty years ago. The train I took from Kansas City came in from the north -- through Davenport I'd guess. That was back when Amtrack had the double decker cars with the bigger airline styled seats.

I do still have people in the west suburbs. Cousins mostly.

Ahhh, back in the day... by reza (2.00 / 0) #6 Mon Oct 09, 2006 at 12:22:54 AM EST
...when Amtrak not only had comfortable accomodations but plenty of routes criss-crossing the country.  Now, it's pretty pitiful.

I've found that the Jolly-ett pronounciation seems to be a lot of older people...like from that generation.  I've heard stories about the naming of the town supposedly goes back to a founding father's daughter- Juliet, but the papers of incorporation said Joliet.  I don't remember the reason or was it a misspelling or what.  But, the old stories of Romeo(ville) and Juliet could be more than fable.

I'm kinda sorta familiar with that area...My sister's not far from GSU a bit NE of there.

I always thought by Vladinator (2.00 / 0) #7 Tue Oct 10, 2006 at 09:04:09 PM EST
That it was named for Lewis Joliet, the french explorer. Thus, the Lewis Joliet Mall that we used to have.

that's one answer... by reza (2.00 / 0) #8 Tue Oct 10, 2006 at 10:37:14 PM EST
It's not the colorful local legend though.
