Diary
By littlestar (Fri May 13, 2005 at 12:13:31 PM EST) (all tags)
The time is growing nearer and we thought you would all, finally, like an update about the grande event. Details inside.

Here finally is an update on HuSistock. Things have been moving forward, if slowly, in our preperation for this momentous event. Here for your perusal is an overview of the events.

Just to be clear, this is an OUTDOOR EVENT!! Although there will be some people sleeping in the house, it is very much an OUTDOOR EVENT. If it rains, there is not room for everyone to come inside.  There will be tarped areas set up (to hang out under) in case of  a spot of rain. People are expected to bring tents in which to sleep, or perhaps snuggle up in someone else's tent!

Friday July 1st - ARRIVAL DAY
Special Activities:
*Horseshoe Tournament
*Fireworks for Canada Day

Saturday July 2cnd

Special Activities:
*Pontoon boat outings (perhaps even “fishing”)

Sunday July 3rd

Special Activities:
*Pontoon boat outings
*Husi 500
*Fireworks (preemptively) for USA day

Monday July 4th - DEPARTURE DAY

Special Activities:
*Clean up the yard!

Everyday Activities:
• Volleyball, Horseshoes, Drinking ($2/beer), Swimming at the lake, BBQing, Eating, Go-Karts, Enjoying the company of others, Music

Food will be available for consumption examples below:
Breakfast: cereal, eggs, bacon, fruit, toast etc.

Lunch/Dinner: deli meats, hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, tofu dogs, soy burgers, potatoes etc. Also each dinner will have something else for entrée (chicken/steak perhaps or bratwurst… didn’t someone mention those?)

It will be very laid back, obviously, and there will hopefully be enough ways (using one of the BBQs or fire with grill) for people to make whatever food they want whenever they want it. There will be a food area set up under a tarp and hopefully we will all help to make it work well.

We will be renting Port-O-Potties. They cost $155 dollars each, for the event (current plan is for 3=$465, plus tax of course).
We’ll need to get some used picnic tables, and some used BBQs if possible- those will cost some money too, but that will depend on the find. I will be hitting some garage sales very soon, we’ll see what happens.

It is very important that we have a good idea of how many people are coming. I hope that everyone will do their best to let us know in advance.

So, that is the update from me. Cheeseburger will soon be posting our current list of attendees (barring the attendees who have asked for anonimity of course) – make sure your name is on it if you want to come. Although no one has written to me yet, it truthfully would be better if everyone didn’t always just write to CBB, he’s got a lot on his plate already.

I'm flying out to the area on the 25th/26th and back on the 6th (maybe the 5th? i don't remember) and will be travelling around beforehand.

i will be renting a car so would be happy to volunteer for airport/train station ferrying duty. :)

i repeat my request for hammock-hanging space. :)

I mean geez, it's Canada. You can eat off the ground.

I wonder what a Canadian porta potty would be like. Sadly, my attendance will be lacking actuality.

HUSISTOCK DONATIONS by littlestar (4.00 / 1) #6 Fri May 13, 2005 at 12:52:49 PM EST
Thank you so much for asking about this, which I should have mentioned in the post.

Please give what you can, things are going to cost us a pretty penny. We will only be using your monies to better the party - we are certainly NOT going to be making any money off of this event, nor was it ever the idea. We just want a little help to pay for the meat and potties etc. We VERY much appreciate anything you can give we know some people have more then others. You can donate at HuSistock. Thank you so much for helping us make it a great time!

what's the weather usually like in late june? by aphrael (2.00 / 0) #4 Fri May 13, 2005 at 12:33:37 PM EST

WEATHER by littlestar (4.00 / 1) #7 Fri May 13, 2005 at 12:57:36 PM EST
The weather should be warm and sunny and nice, if the gods are smiling on us. The crappiest it should get is rainy. So far it doesn't look like a wet spring again, in fact it's been dry, so rain in July seems unlikely at this point.

and are mosquito nets recommended? by aphrael (2.00 / 0) #5 Fri May 13, 2005 at 12:33:57 PM EST

Mosquitos by littlestar (2.00 / 0) #8 Fri May 13, 2005 at 01:09:10 PM EST
West Nile Virus, does exist in Ontario, although there have not been any cases so far in our township. Last year we did not find an abundance of mosquitoes here (likely in part due to our being so close to the lake) but they still are around, there is no doubt about that. (Remember too that most people who are infected with West Nile are just mildly ill, with light flu like symptoms, it is mostly the young and the old who need be extra watchful)

I would however recommend that everyone come prepared with mosquito repellent (with DEET if possible as per website), or citronella (which is what we use for us and Popsicle). No one wants to get lots of bites in any case. It is in the night that it normally is worst and people should be tented by that time (or we'll just say that here). Although, if hammocking, a net would be appropriate I think. There will also be a GIANT bonfire at night so mosquitoes will flee our immediate area.

WAIT A SECOND....

is this actually going to be some sort of internet hippie free love orgy thing? because i've heard about those on teevee.

cause i don't want to feel obligated to have sex with any husians. no offence. (except ti_dave)

haha, hooray for intentional ambiguity, do i mean that i want to sleep with ti_dave or that offence is only meant in the case of ti_dave. no one will ever know. i hope his wife doesn't get mad at me.

i'll bring however many it'd take to feed us all, if we decide that's what we want. just give me a headcount, and i'll bring an assortment. same goes for breakfast sausage. i could also bring a ham or hot dogs, but space in the car is limited and i dont have room to freeze it all while i accumulate it. and i dont know how crabby they get about hauling it across the border.

There may be a mechanism to get permission to import your stuff, this document may be a starting point - http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/E/pub/cp/rc4161/rc4161-e.html

hi littlestar. by rmg (4.00 / 3) #15 Fri May 13, 2005 at 03:42:25 PM EST
i look forward to this event, but i'm afraid that, due to my somewhat unusual nature as a contributor, i will require some additional accomodation (which, i'm sure you will agree, will be more than made up for by the chance people will have to meet the great rmg -- perhaps you could charge a cover fee offset the expense):
  1. an armed escort. you just never know with these internet people! the instability so easily visible in their writing could erupt at any moment, particularly in the presence of their online archnemesis, the notorious rmg.
  2. a jar full of red m&ms. i know you'll be tempted to ask why i need them. the simple fact is: i just do.
  3. a menu. i have a variety of unusual allergies, ranging from lemongrass to elderberries. it will be important for me to assess any possible risk of exposure in advance.
  4. a canadian phrasebook. i always worry about being identified as an american when i travel abroad. i find that familiarizing myself with the local vernacular helps me avoid being found out.
  5. a seat of at the table such that i can see everyone in the room at all times. while the armed guard is usually enough, i also like to keep an eye on everyone myself just to be sure.
if you find you cannot provide one or more of these items, it is possible that we can work out alternative arrangements. beyond that, i look forward to meeting all of you. i'm sure this will be an wonderful diversion for all.

You are so delightful. It would be so nice if you could come my friend.
1.I will have a security contingent here in the form of my not so little brother and also some good Latvian boys to back me up. Perhaps you should stake Clover Kicker up on the offer for private security.
  1. Have fun on your drive here, they aren't that hard to separate.
  2. No probs, in Canada we are required to list the ingredients on all our foods (you can read right?)
  3. I'm a linguist, I've got your books about language use.
  4. This is easy - you can just stand at the back of the yard with your back against the fence. I'm sure no one will mind that.

We all look forward to meeting you too RMG - don't disappoint us!

I emailed CBB about this a few days ago but haven't gotten a response yet. Understandable in light of how busy he is.

What's the recommended way to get from Toronto to Gilford? Is there a bus or train or something?

After a while he could probably just run the thing on righteousness... -- Alarmist, on blixco's car

Trains and Buses by littlestar (4.00 / 2) #45 Sat May 14, 2005 at 08:11:38 AM EST
There is the Go Train from Toronto to Bradford (15 minutes from us) which is mostly a commuter thing so it's only in the morning and at home time (5 - 6pm). Any other times there are buses which come here, but take about half an hour longer. Also, we will be doing runs to Toronto to pick people up. so there should be a number of options.

When people let us know more specifically how they are getting here and when, we will be able to make more concrete plans regarding pick-ups.
