I asked in #husi, but the attention level there is noticably low, and besides, I figure it'd be faster to post this and wait for a response (or two) than to wait there for someone to answer.

Anyhow, are those torrent programs actually worthwhile, or another CPU anchor?  Is it really worth my time to download a tarball and tar -zxvf, ./configure, make, make install, make clean that bastard and run it, in order to get stuff, or am I better off using the usenet or other such things?

(please note, I'm using a somewhat homegrown Mandrake 10 (with a number of specific tweaks) on a 400mHz computer)

Were I in search of killer serials, such as a few Black Adder seasons, are they out there, or is it a big pornhole?

Any other notes I should make?

Works for me by motty (4.00 / 1) #1 Tue Dec 27, 2005 at 06:28:36 PM EST
On a system not dissimiliar to yours, the magic of Bittorrent has so far found me a TV series I was after, some assorted anime and a bunch of music.

Large downloads can take a while, though; eg the TV series (all 11G of it) took about five days over a standard home broadband connection. I was using the machine in the meanwhile with no problems, and for that series, it was worth it.

If you can find anything approaching the stuff around in torrents anywhere else, I for one would be interested to know where.

Alright, that comment given, I shall find the tarball that I require to install on this system.  Hopefully, I can get one that isn't to horribly dependent on processor speed.

The standard original BT by motty (2.00 / 0) #5 Tue Dec 27, 2005 at 08:01:37 PM EST
.. is mostly (entirely?) in Python, and processor speed is absolutely not an issue, afaik. Can't speak for the Java clients since I haven't bothered with them.

It's the shit. by CountSpatula (2.00 / 0) #3 Tue Dec 27, 2005 at 07:25:49 PM EST
Black Adder is by far the finest television series aired, hands down.  I can't even begin to recall how many times I have wished for a bonghit while watching that show, on PBS.  And, since I no longer partake in such asides, I will have to find another inebriate (most likely stout beer) to take its place.

I am also kinda in search of pretty much the whole Red Dwarf series, even though a friend has told me it's not as good as the book.  Well, duh.  I mean, shit, could we ever expect television to live up to a book?

bittorrent is best for stuff that just came out (new TV episodes, stuff that just came out on DVD, etc.). For older stuff, it isn't so hot.

It is a Java application, you just untar it and run it from there.

All the configuration is kept in your home directory.

No messing with compilation, etc.
