So I'm sitting at home and my email beeps.  It's from a fellow astronomer who was making some observations for me.  The telescope has an all-sky camera which we use to see where clouds are and whatnot.

Anyway, he sends me an image grab from the all-sky cam exposing the most amazing scientific discovery I have ever had the honor to witness.....

Bird Claws by Gedvondur (4.00 / 4) #7 Wed Oct 26, 2005 at 03:13:53 PM EST
I wonder if that is some kind of raptor.  I don't know squat about birds, but it seems to have substanial claws....Mind you that's hard to judge without any scale.....

After comparing it to a different image, it was determined it was a great horned owl.

Great Horned Owl? by Gedvondur (4.00 / 2) #9 Wed Oct 26, 2005 at 03:21:30 PM EST
Can't be.  Owls have to have Tootsie-Pops.  Everybody knows that.

That brings me to the idea of Owl Turds which I suppose isn't that much different from Tootsie Rolls.  I think I broke myself.

three licks to get to the center, and we dont know how long that owl has been there.

if he's a little pidgeon er, scuse me, Owl-toed, it might still be the case that there are 2 toes on the front and two on the back (in these cases, sticking out sideways).

How much damage can those Owls do?  What kind of front element do you put on a big telescope?  I’m guessing there’s some sort of protective element there that would need to be cleaned or replaced from time to time.

well, that was just a small all-sky cam by joh3n (2.00 / 0) #27 Wed Oct 26, 2005 at 05:20:56 PM EST
so it may just scratch the platic casing, which would be a pain, but not horrible.
