Make a note in your Calendar, this Friday is VS2FP-Friday!

VS2FP-Friday

The idea is simple, this friday just remember that the "Vote Story to Front Page" box exists, and if you read something good, vote it to the front page.

Don't vote everything up there, but just make an effort to remember to vote at least one decent story to the front page.

Thanks!

Reduction in adverts.

I've removed the Amazon advert box and the top right google advert box. There are a couple of reasons for this.

  1. I don't like having them. I've never really liked the Amazon adverts. They're annoying.
  2. They don't really pay that much, and I wouldn't really miss them if they're gone.
The adverts at the bottom (or in the middle if you're not logged in) of the stories remain, as do the list of Amazon products in a story, if you mention an Amazon url they'll still appear. You can still buy products through the links, and I'll still get some cash from it.

I really need to spruce up the Accounts page. It's got a rolling year end at the moment, which is a bit shit. It's made the figures look a bit funny.

Anyway, there's now a "Donate" nag advert. Submit more adverts!

Right, must get back to work.

Every Friday should be VS2FP Friday! by debacle (2.00 / 0) #2 Wed Oct 26, 2005 at 11:58:55 AM EST
Especially when all you strangely-oriented types get pissed on Thursdays. WTF is that? A weekend haze primer?

Write disgusting animal/man love story on Fridays from now on. Or Battlestar Galactica Cally fanfic stories.

As my virgin eyes have rarely feasted on the monstrocity that was "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer".

I'd rather watch The Golden Girls than Buffy.

Bloody Mallory the other night. It was a French Buffy style movie. You can sup at the goodness of B-movie foreign kick-ass women if you want. Oh, and blue haired transvestites.

what is the VS2FP algorithm? by Kellnerin (4.00 / 2) #10 Wed Oct 26, 2005 at 01:10:36 PM EST
Does it have a threshold like the modsub? Is there a time window on it? I try to remember to use the feature, but I'm never sure if it does any good or not. If it's been more than 24 hours since the diary was posted, can it still be voted to FP? Or if it passes midnight in some time zone?

I wonder if it would help if (a) the vote to FP box were directly below the diary instead of in the sidebar, so you'd have to see it when scrolling down to the comments, or (b) there was some kind of counter of "X users have voted this story to FP" to draw attention to it, and encourage people to vote either way, the same way that rating comments will sometimes encourage other people to rate them too. FP diary voting could still be anonymous.

It does have a threshold, but it's a secret (shhhhh).

When x number of people have voted, it makes a descision. If y-z (where y is  yes votes and z is no votes) is > p then the an offer is made to the author to put it on the front page. x number of people have to vote before the offer is made. The author can decide they don't want their story on the front page, and it won't go there until they say yes.

that helps, by Kellnerin (2.00 / 0) #14 Wed Oct 26, 2005 at 07:28:54 PM EST
but it's the time thing that I'm really wondering about. Is there a point after which votes no longer count? I seem to remember there was ... but even if there isn't, if someone doesn't read a diary for a day or two, they may think it's not worth voting anymore. Maybe the box could be hidden if voting is closed ...
