I have just said No.

It feels very strange.

Not only do I not have time, but I don't think it's worth a third submission.

I found out this week that a document I thought would be about 20 pages is 120 pages.  I'm supposed to edit and wordsmith it, AND get it into the right order as specified in the RFA.  ASAP, please, because these are pages at the front of the several thousand page document, and it all has to be page numbered.

I told my boss, "If you do that to me again, I'll quit."  But I didn't tell her what "that" was.  I'm on her calendar a week from Monday to discuss it.  "That" is putting me on something the institution doesn't really want to succeed under circumstances that require heroic efforts at the end of three months of constant heroicism, including an all-nighter.

This situation is not "that", but I wouldn't be in it if "that" hadn't happened.  I'd have had six additional weeks of time to work on this.

And I may pull the plug on another project that I think will fail.

I feel like a grown-up.

You go Grrrl! by Farq Fenderson (2.00 / 0) #1 Thu Jan 20, 2005 at 12:52:09 PM EST
Perspective takes forever to hone.

I got bitten once by a project designed to suck w.r.t. time constraints. Further doomed by last minute changes when the project is already a week overdue. Unfortunately, I didn't know when to say "when", so I got bitten badly in the bad karma department.

It's good to hear that you perceived it in time to make the decision.

Would that I could choose the play, the cast, the roles, and the stage. Would that I knew the mysteries of your dream, but could one heart hold the secrets of two, one should suffice, and I would not need you.

Karma by iGrrrl (2.00 / 0) #6 Thu Jan 20, 2005 at 02:57:21 PM EST
If my job were judged like /. moderation, I'd have maxxed my Karma a year ago.

And realizing that, I feel this odd urge to wonder if one can troll in my job.  I don't think so, but I know I'm getting tired when inappropriate parallels overwhelm me.  Once, after a three hour blue book molecular biology exam, I couldn't talk to anyone in my favorite bar.  They kept walking away as I correlated the mating behavior around me to the factors involved in viral genomic replication.

It's hard to learn to say no, but once you do, it's strangely empowering. It means that you are no longer just taking what you can get, but are instead choosing what to do.

Power by iGrrrl (4.00 / 1) #5 Thu Jan 20, 2005 at 02:52:15 PM EST
I purposely set up this job so that I would have little power.  I control no money, and only the fates of those brave enough to contract for me, like toxicfur.

But I wasn't sure whether I'd given up the power to say no by giving up contractor status.  Today I decided that, if I had, I was taking it back.

My thesis advisor, when we were talking about jobs/life post grad school said that she tried to make all her decisions as if money were not a factor.  Sound advice.  If I have to quit, I will.

Oh Damn, I've just had a Dune flashback.  "He who can destroy a thing controls a thing."

There are a lot of several-syllable words involved in the process, but behind it all there might be Sid Vicious' middle finger.

I think by MillMan (2.00 / 0) #8 Thu Jan 20, 2005 at 03:22:35 PM EST
I give a good impression during job interviews that I will put in 40 solid hours a week, and that's it, working 50 on rare occasions if needed. I have no doubt that has cost me job offers, but obviously they weren't jobs I wanted. At the same time, I'm not a phd working within the diabolical grant system either.

he's not trolling - That's just the truth.

You're sticking it to the man.

On a side note, do people in your field generally put in more than 60 hours a week?

What is your field?

cyclical by iGrrrl (2.00 / 0) #12 Fri Jan 21, 2005 at 12:40:27 AM EST
This is what I do, written in answer to a question from Dr Hoffm4n.

As for the amount of work/time, it's cyclical.  Everything I do is to hard federal government deadlines, so if it slips, then it's all over, no second chances.  In the summer I might work 10-15 hours a week.  When deadlines loom it can get up to 80 hours.  In Academia, especially in biomedical sciences, 60 hours weeks are more the norm than the exception.

So did I, but the Devil defaulted on the mortgage and it returned to owner.
