Things...

Things I've done to the site.
Things I've discovered.
Things I've heard.
Things I've seen.
Things I've said.

Site Things.

I've changed the google advert for non-logged in people. It's big and ugly now. If it annoys you, create and account and login to the site. Then you can turn all the adverts off.

I've fiddled with the accounts page a bit. Just to keep a years worth of stuff active on there. I need to put a few more transactions on it as well, but the details are sat at home and I keep forgetting.

Plus, you can leave comments on it now as well.

There is a new "Law" topic, with a suitably crap icon.

Discovered Things.

My Dad has an Uncle he'd not heard about before. This uncle was born out of wedlock to a first wife of my Great-Granddad. Which is most likely why he'd never heard of him.

The first wife also came as a surprise.

Things I've heard

I've not heard any CD's for a while. I'm mostly listening to the radio in my car, and I can't listen to CD's on my computer at home because XP sucks donkey balls. Why it has to try and do a rip & play just to play a CD is beyond me. What's wrong with just playing the CD? The CD is spinning so slowly you can't even hear it when you play it at single speed. When XP tries to do it's Rip & Play though it sounds like a fricking Jet engine on Reverse thrust.

Things I've seen

Well, I've not seen them yet, but I've got a couple of parcels waiting at home. One is hopefully J's birthday present. The other one is hopefully the External USB hard disk enclosure. I'm going to put the hard disk that is currently on the shelf in that, so I can boot into my old Linux set up and get on with some Scoop programming. Until I get the cash for a development machine, it looks like I'm going to have to do it that way.

Should have fun tonight persuading that to work.

Things I've said

I said to myself this morning that I was actually going to crack on with some work today, and just get it done.

Why do I lie to myself :)

This one's more of a "Justice" icon, but having both would be a bit silly.

you should stop battling with a stagnant platform. perl/apache/mysql simply does not offer the agility and ease of development cheaply available via the .NET platform, or even the php/apache platform. in fact, php has several excellent content management systems already written that far surpass scoop in every way you could likely think to extend it anyway.

 just a thought.

Rip 'n play by Cloaked User (2.00 / 0) #12 Wed Jan 19, 2005 at 06:51:55 AM EST
I've not played CDs on XP much, but I don't believe that that's the default behaviour; it's possible that something you've installed has buggered about with things for you...

Try right-clicking on the CD drive in explorer, choose "Properties", then "Auto Play", and set the option for "Music CDs" to prompt (or play with your preferred media player, or whatever).

This is not a psychotic episode. It is a cleansing moment of clarity.

Meh by hulver (2.00 / 0) #13 Wed Jan 19, 2005 at 07:00:56 AM EST
It doesn't actually rip it to disk, but it does read the audio data digitally, rather than just asking the CD player to play the CD. There is a difference.

Changing the properties on the CD does change the behaviour, it changes it from roaring jet engine with music, to quiet cd player spinning but no music.

Very annoying.

Windows, it just works.

...to quiet cd player spinning but no music

Is the audio cable definitely in place connecting the CD drive to the soundcard?

I have considered that by hulver (4.00 / 1) #15 Wed Jan 19, 2005 at 07:27:33 AM EST
Dunno. I thought it was, however I was too busy ranting about how shit XP was to actually check facts.

Try it, for lo-fi goodness.
