Back into the swing of things after the Christmas break. I went dancing this week and hated every minute of it (which inspired the title).

Inside: Wedding, dancing, family history, some numbers

Wedding

Only nine weeks to go. It doesn't seem like very long. All the invitations went out this week (after a grueling day spent assembling them). There's not much left to do.

Dancing

On Monday my fiancée took me to a dancing thing. Some guy named Mr Cha Cha who is apparently well known in dancing circles is choreographing a finalé for the Festival of Perth. I've only seen him on TV but I thought he was a pompous git.

Monday was the first lesson. I hated every minute of it. For a start it was poorly organised - the number of participants must be making things difficult. There was only one instructor who knew what he was doing; the helper drones seemed as clueless as we were most of the time. I felt really uncomfortable the whole time. I struggled to pick up the steps, and I struggled even more to remember what order everything went in. I really don't see the point. Most of the time we're not even dancing with our partner - we're just wiggling our hips and arses around at Mr Cha Cha's whim. Not that he's attending the rehearsals of course; he's far too important for that.

Bring on the bridal waltz. At least I feel motivated to learn that. Mr Cha Cha's huge ego-stroking session doesn't interest me.

Family history

I've been getting into it a bit in the past few days. There's a lot more online now than there was a few years ago. I had reasonable success with one branch of the family in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses (is that the correct plural for census?), plus a marriage in 1875. Another branch is far more elusive - I found my great-grandmother living with her sister in 1901, but nothing at all before that. I'm being hampered by ancestors with common names, all living in London.

Some numbers

For last year (and 2003)

  • Movies: 46 (45)
  • Money spent on movies: $451.35 ($345.45)
  • Flights: 16 (21)
  • Miles flown: 36,685 (40,900)
  • Nights in hotels: 48 (49)

IMHO, not much point unless it's fun, I don't see the point of learning steps and stuff.

Family History by hulver (4.00 / 1) #2 Fri Jan 14, 2005 at 01:46:30 AM EST
We got a scanned copy of the 1841 Census for Derbyshire from this place. Although you have to read through the scanned pages yourself, it doesn't take as long as you think it would.

You do have to know what area you want though.

Managed to find some of J's relatives on it as well.

Electronic stuff by sven (2.00 / 0) #5 Fri Jan 14, 2005 at 03:07:59 AM EST
At some point in the not too distant future I suspect I'll exhaust all the electronic avenues of research, and then it could get interesting. Especially since I'm in Australia and they're in London and Gloucestershire.

I could do with some decent software to help with all this stuff. What do you use?

I use a web site by hulver (2.00 / 0) #7 Fri Jan 14, 2005 at 03:22:19 AM EST
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/

You do have to pay if you want to contact other people on the site, but it's pretty good.

Plus, you can export all the information you enter in GedCom format, which is a pretty standard Family Tree file format.

We've been contacted by 2 distant relations since putting our tree into it.

It doesn't like me by sven (2.00 / 0) #10 Fri Jan 14, 2005 at 12:28:37 PM EST
I have a gedcom file already, and when I try to import it I get this:

HappyGenesReunited error '800a9c68'
Application-defined or object-defined error
/genesreunited.asp, line 13

Oh well, I'll see what else I can find on freshmeat.

Huh? by dunc (4.00 / 1) #3 Fri Jan 14, 2005 at 01:49:22 AM EST
How did you do that? I can't even remember what I did last week, let alone how many movies I saw 2 years ago.

It's almost like you have some kind of... I don't know, record of your life stored in your head, or something.

I keep records by sven (2.00 / 0) #4 Fri Jan 14, 2005 at 02:58:36 AM EST
It started with just holding on to the tickets after I'd seen a movie, then I thought I might as well make a proper record of it. I don't know why, I just did, and I've kept it up ever since. It's all online - movies 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005. Also my flight log.

And I do understand why other people might find this sort of behaviour baffling.

Actually I don't find it baffling by dunc (2.00 / 0) #11 Fri Jan 14, 2005 at 02:49:28 PM EST
I find it kind of awe inspiring. I wish that I had the patience for this sort of thing as I'd love to have this kind of dataset for myself.

What I do find baffling is how you could rate Paycheck as 3 stars and Underworld as 2. You do know that Underworld has Kate Beckinsale in right? In tight PCV, like the whole time?

Blimey, that came out sounding really shallow, didn't it? Oh, well.

sounds very bad. i liked my dance class, but i think it was only because our instructor was very good. spent at least one lesson getting the basic step and rhythm ingrained in us, and only then went on to other steps. once we'd learn a new combination, he'd put it with the basic, or with something else we'd learned long ago and were familiar with, and we never felt overwhelmed trying to remember how each step went. our exams consisted of performing a combination for the class, as well as some stuff we'd made up ourselves that went with the rhythm. very good class.

Correct.

I don't care if people hate my guts; I assume most of them do.
