I built an aeroplane
It was just like the real ones that I saw when I was younger
But it was too small for me
To crawl inside the cockpit and fly away
...
It's just a model
Built with plastic and with glue
But every day I go down to the airport
And I fly away from
I fly away from you

Inside: Olympics, hotlists, houses, homebrew, Citibank

Olympics

For the past couple of weeks we've had lots of electrical retailers acting even more keen than usual to sell us huge widescreen TVs and digital set-top boxes. Now that the Olympics have actually started, it appears that none of it is in widescreen. If I had rushed out and bought a huge new TV in preparation, I imagine I'd be pretty pissed off right now.

I haven't actually watched much of the Olympics. All the interesting bits seem to be on late at night. We were watching some table tennis last night, where the Aussie guy was bouncing the ball on the table prior to serving. It seemed quite bizarre, since he was bouncing from within an inch of the table.

HuSi: Cannot display all 3 hotlists

Why not? It's not like I have a lot in any of them, and it would make things much easier sometimes.

Houses

We've been looking at houses this weekend. It's the first time we've looked seriously. We started by driving past some that we found in Saturday's paper. Unfortunately it was quite uninspiring. Examples include:

  • Double brick and tile, 3x2, large bedrooms, renovated kitchen, lacks street appeal, $280,000. It certainly did lack street appeal. I think they had subdivided the block lengthwise. The block was so narrow they had a garage where their front garden should have been.
  • 766sqm, corner block, solid house, jarrah boards, 2 car garage, $225k-$235k. Looks like it's in desparate need of some maintenance. And the house was on a funny angle on the block.
  • 543sqm block only, $139,500. Looks quite good, except the blocks are really long and thin (only 12m street frontage).
BTW, why do they bother listing a price range? Does anyone offer the higher amount when presumably the seller would be happy with the lower amount?

I had a look on the internet for more this afternoon. It was quite promising. Examples of houses I like are this near new 4x2, another 4x2, a 3x1 on an enormous block, and this 4x3 in an excellent location.

We shall have to talk to a mortgage broker soon.

Homebrew update

I bottled my homebrew tonight. I also managed to sneak a taste when no-one was looking. Pleasingly, it smells like beer, and tastes almost like beer. Almost. It looks like waiting the two weeks for it to be ready could be worthwhile.

Citibank

I rang up to cancel one of their products on Friday. There's no point having a $5000 credit facility if I'm not going to use it, especially when I come to apply for a home loan. Citibank tried too hard to be helpful.

  • I would like to close my Redicredit account.
  • Is there any particular reason why?
  • Because I've never used it and I can't forsee myself having a use for it in the future.
  • Would you like to transfer the available credit onto your credit card?
  • No thankyou.
  • Are you aware of our current balance transfer promotion?
  • Yes, but I don't have any other balances to transfer.
  • In that case, we can send you out a cheque for $500 or more that will be treated like a balance transfer.
  • No thankyou.
  • Ooh, I see you didn't use a telephone PIN. Would you like me to set one up for you?
  • No thankyou.

Ascot by cam (3.00 / 0) #1 Sun Aug 15, 2004 at 02:20:01 AM EST
Is the ascot one renovated or newer? Are Bassandean and Ascot in Perth or Freemantle (forgive a t'othersiders lack of Westralian knowledge here).

When we head back we are probably priced out of the Sydney market so we will most likely settle in another city. Seems Newcastle has been going through a rejuvenation with Sydney being so unaffordable. I have lived there though. Not so sure if I want to return, my wife liked it though.

My wife liked Canberra and Melbourne too. Canberra is more in her temperature range. But if Perth is the great undiscovered city .... we might fly across the continent in our next holiday and have a look.

Suburbs by sven (6.00 / 1) #2 Sun Aug 15, 2004 at 02:43:18 AM EST
The areas we're looking at are all east of the city near the river. Heading along Guildford Road towards Midland, there's Maylands, Bayswater, Ashfield, and Bassendean. I grew up in Maylands, but it's gone considerably upmarket since then so we can't afford to buy there. Bassendean is probably the nicest of the remaining suburbs, except it's further out so it's less convenient for my work. And since I work in Nedlands (just west of the city) it makes it even worse.

Ascot is just south of the river and comparable to Bayswater in distance from the city. Parts of Ascot are now very upmarket as well. The house I linked to (looks quite new to me) must be in the less prestigious part of the suburb for that price. More typical Ascot houses are here and here.

Perth is definitely worth a visit. And you never know, you might like it. Having been on the big bucks in the US for a few years, you could probably afford to live pretty much anywhere.

I dont think so. We dont have so much equity that we can afford a $500,000 Ozbucks house. With the USD we get a 30% discount, but that isnt enough for a $350,000 USD ($500,00 AUD) house in Perth. Our mortgage would still be large and Australian salaries are less than US ones.

I dont know if you are interested or not, but I started a scoop site for Australian politics/issues, it is at; http://www.southsearepublic.org/. It is running on my DSL line at the moment.

doh! by sven (6.00 / 1) #7 Mon Aug 16, 2004 at 05:02:36 PM EST
With relation to housing, you would probably be better off in Perth than over east anyway.

I'll keep an eye on southsearepublic.org, but I probably won't contribute much. Maybe an occasional MLP. I pointed out your site to one of the guys at work, but it wasn't working at the time. In any case, he was bookmarked your Austral-Asian Strike Fighter story on husi to read later.

Strike Fighter by cam (3.00 / 0) #8 Mon Aug 16, 2004 at 11:06:37 PM EST
Sydney seems the most unaffordable of all the Australian cities. I also published the Strike Fighter article through the k5 queue as well. The discussion under the HuSi diary was of higher quality though.
