Sometimes I sit at home and
Wonder if she's sitting at home
Thinking of me and wondering if I'm
Sitting at home, thinking about her
Or am I just wasting my time

Inside: Free trade agreement, Jersey Girl (no spoilers), wedding rings and limousines.

Free Trade Agreement

Well, it looks like the Australia/US FTA has got through the Senate. Apparently Labor got some changes through that affect prescription medicine and local TV content, but I'm not sure what those changes are. I was most amused by the Democrats' proposal though...

In the final amendment to the implementation bill moved in the Senate, the Australian Democrats tried but failed to change the FTA's name to "Restricted Trade Agreement".

Democrats trade spokesman Aden Ridgeway told Parliament the party had considered "Unfair Trade Agreement", the "Un-Australian bill" and "51st State of America Transition Bill".

Jersey Girl

Last night's movie was Jersey Girl, and it was quite disappointing. Admittedly it didn't look that great in the previews, but being a Kevin Smith film I still expected something more. Maybe I missed something profound, but it seemed very mainstream and uninspiring. It didn't even have Jay and Silent Bob in it!

Aside: I've just been looking on viewaskew.com and suddenly I want a Chasing Amy Poster. I guess I couldn't put the poster up at work, but I'm not sure.

Wedding rings

We looked at some wedding rings last night. Now my fiancée wants one with diamonds. Hmmm. She was thinking a patterned gold band would be ok, but they seem to detract too much from the engagement ring. Diamonds on the other hand, do not detract. It's funny if you think about it.

We both found rings that we liked and it came to about $1200. I think we'll have to try to negotiate a better price than that. Hopefully we can get it down to $1000.

Limousines

Also trying to organise a limousine for the wedding. I'm trying hard to find a Holden (probably a Statesman) but they're quite rare, and every one I've found has been booked. The closest I've found is a 10 seater Holden Caprice, but it's too big and too expensive ($799 for three hours, compared to around $300 for a Ford Fairlane or LTD). Looks like we'll end up being stuck with a Ford. Hopefully the bride's father is forgiving.

Holden? by ENOENT (3.00 / 0) #1 Thu Aug 12, 2004 at 06:18:46 PM EST
Any relation to Holden Caulfield?

Also, I suggest dragging your mate off by the hair to your cave, rather than spending money on a limo.

Then again, I'm just a dumb Yank.

What is Holden Caulfield? Holden is the Australian car manufacturer allied with General Motors.

The limo thing doesn't bother me. The fiancée is keen on it because she hasn't been in one before. In the scheme of things, $300 isn't that much compared with the total cost of the wedding. Plus it means we don't have to ask for a volunteer to stay sober to drive us around.

Explain that it's against your principles to buy diamonds. Many of them come from dodgy regimes.

I've tried that already. The answer I got was, well we'll buy an old ring and have it remade. Curse the cunning female logic. When i tried to use the "but those diamonds were mined by poor people living in poverty" techinque, it was countered with "they've been dead for ages, don't waste diamonds."

You can buy 'safe' diamonds, and to the contrary of your gf's lovely, caring sentiment, there are people involved in that trainwreck we call the diamond industry who are not yet dead.

This is Oz content in a Euro time zone.
It's a bit disconcerting to see a post about Holden's at this hour. (I'm just waiting for the Monaro post.)
Ever tried to explain The Castle to someone who's never been to Oz ? It just sounds like gibberish.

I wonder if you can stretch a Monaro.

Won't be making anymore film appearances in Kevin Smith films ... Alanis (God) closed the book on the Askewniverse at the end of the credits for J&SBSB

Good on the democrats. With the Liberals and Labor both going for it, not much their seven senators can do.

On the diamonds, go on a fossicking holiday and see if you cant fossick a rock up, might mean more. I have an opal from Lightning Ridge I found, that is intended to go on a wedding ring. We havent done it yet, but we both know that if we do get around to it, that will be the rock on it.

I married a joisey girl. There is an industrial suburban power to joisey people, that is without the New York arrogance and entitlement. You can do a lot worse than hanging around with people from joisey.
