Weekend cycling.
TODO list.
Some other stuff.

Got in two good rides this weekend. I was shooting for three, but Monday's weather was veh bad. Saturday was northwest to Littleton. Sunday was southwest to Dover-Sherbourne. And Sunday, I had a riding partner! It was a guy a work with occasionally who is Very Fit[tm] swoon but not much of cyclist so it was a slow day, but that's okay. It was great having a partner. And, as it was the second day, I should probably have taken it a bit easier anyway. Or something.

Anyway, knee trouble again on Saturday, so I raised the saddle yet another couple of MM and no problem at all on Sunday. Sunday was a bit shorter, and much slower, so I don't know what, if any, factors those were in the absense of trouble.

Saturday's trip was up through Littleton to Kimball's and return. My client sent me an e-mail saying she was taking her mother there for the 4th. I told her I was there the day before. She said "you should have stopped by, I'm only another 20 miles." Heh. Maybe before the summer's out.

On the way back through, I think, Concord, a kamikaze chipmunk darted across my path, then turned around and darted back. I hit it. Thump-thump. I don't think it survived, but I didn't go look. Stupid chipmunk.

Sunday's trip was to Dover-Sherbourne and back through Newton. Immense palacial estates like you wouldn't believe. I kept wondering if they were really houses or the club house of a golf course or something. But residences they were. Amazing. And I didn't see a single sole at any one of them. Do people even live there? On second thought, the type of people who live there probably jetted off to Nantucket for the weekend. There was like no traffic. Very nice.

Monday's weather was bad, so I don't think I'll have the full 1500 miles of training it, but it will be close.

Esplanade fireworks from the deck
Went to a friend's for BBQ and fireworks. None of that Esplanade stuff for me. It's way too much of a zoo. But I did ride through there Saturday afternoon. You would not believe the security. More state cops in boats than I knew there were. Great time to rob a bank, I guess, since they're all in the water. National Guardsmen walking around in groups of four. Park rangers on horses everywhere. At least the state and no the city has jurisdiction over the Esplanade, so the chances of the city cops shooting someone else is reduced.

My friend John, who was also at the BBQ, said he'd come to a midlife crisis. (He turned 50 last March.) He is going to quit his job as a software engineer (java, IIRC), He applied and was accepted to North Bennet Street School in their piano technology program. I have to say I was a bit surprised. I don't know what this program is like, but their furniture making classes are world famous, so I assume it's good.

It's funny because several years ago, I had another acquaitance (actually, the bf of another woman I worked with) whose company was bought out by Microsoft. He moved to Redmond for a year, then came back, quit and enrolled in the cabinet and furniture making program.

I see they have a bookbinding program. I've always been interested in that! I'm not quite in midlife crisis yet, but I can feel it coming! I like what I do, but I'm really growing quite tired of software.

My big ride starts on Saturday. I've got many things yet to do. I caught the edge of my only good pair of shorts and ripped a good chunk of the side out, so I need to go get a new pair. Costco has the best deal I've found on cameral memory, so much get there to get at least one more chip for my camera. And I was given bad information by my insurance company. They said I would be able to order and pick up a new glucometer from the only company I was allowed to get it from (that is, the one they'd pay for). That's not true, apparently. They only ship UPS, there's no where to pick it up from. Now I'm wondering if it will get here in time. Hope so. I can't carry the brick I've got now. I shouldn't have waited so long, I guess. I just called to make sure it had been shipped and I guess there's only one woman that does it. I got her voicemail and she works on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Gah! Maybe I'll have to buy it on my own. But No! She just called back and said it would "probably" be here today. I have a doctor appointment Friday morning, and my brother gets here Friday afternoon. I've got a hotel reservation at the starting line for Friday night. So I have the car reserved to get my stuff to the hotel, then to the food store so I don't leave my brother with an empty fridge, then bring the car back, unload the food, get back to North Station to get the train back to the start. Ugh. Zoom zoom zoom.

I've been watching the Tour de France on my fuzzy cable connection. It's been good so far. At least the only thing Tyler Hamilton has broken so far is a set of handlebars. I have to say, though, I'm getting a little tired of All Lance, All The Time[tm]. And who is the brain dead bozo who thought up those "Cyclism" promos? Gah! Those things are annoying as hell!

Go Estonia!

Anybody want a tour of my neighborhood?

Lance Armstrong by MohammedNiyalSayeed (6.00 / 1) #1 Tue Jul 06, 2004 at 08:59:20 AM EST

makes a cameo appearance in the cinematic masterpiece currently in theaters known as "Dodgeball". His performance brought tears to my eye. And not in the usual Lance-Armstrong-tears-in-my-eye manner, either, more the funny manner.

Also, beware the guild of bookbinders. You have been duly warned. They are not to be trifled with. I would provide more details, but I am under specific orders not to do such.

Almost every single person I've dated prior to Her Royal Highness was a dirty socialist. Hell, at one point *I* was a dirty socialist. Where do you think I picked up all my negative stereotypes of them?

'Twas I that was inducted into the Ancient Mystic Order of Bookmaking, Frau Hack. Though, technically, I've "dated" myself on a number of occasions.

It's kinda an on again off again thing.  Like CU, sorta, but with less angst (she's always there for me...*snif*).

I think he's personal friends with Ben Stiller, isn't he? I think Stiller MC'd his foundation's awards recognition ceremony last year or something.

I finally did it! by Evil Cloaked User (6.00 / 1) #5 Tue Jul 06, 2004 at 09:23:52 AM EST
I got off my ass and went for a respectable-distance ride. And rather distressingly, my left hip appears to be a bit fucked now. How the hell do you fuck up your hip?

seat too high and rocking back & forth? Seat too far back and pushing too much forward?

I can't figure out a knee. I'd be hopeless with a hip.

[ Parent ]

I've heard that about hips. by ambrosen (6.00 / 1) #13 Tue Jul 06, 2004 at 10:46:53 AM EST
That is to say, if the hips ache then the saddle's probably too high. Most people err on the low side with saddles, but probably not someone who commutes as far as ECU does.

I've never had issue with it before, but this was the first long-distance ride I've done on this bike, especially since finally getting the hang of that lower-gear higher-cadence thing.

It's feeling a lot better than it did this morning thankfully.

Wood working by jimgon (6.00 / 1) #21 Wed Jul 07, 2004 at 05:25:12 AM EST
You know I've considered dropping out of IT and doing wood working.  I think there's a value to handmade furniture with an artistic touch.  I also think certain people would pay for custom furniture designed to their specification.  But I haven't hit the point in life where I would finally jump off that bridge.

Check out North Bennet St. School. The stuff they do there is amazing.

They had a show of sorts at the Architectural Center on Newbury St. They had stuff made of bird's eye maple and crotch wood that was just stunning.

As the economy drifts by jimgon (6.00 / 1) #24 Thu Jul 08, 2004 at 03:47:32 AM EST
I expect there will always be a demand for quality handmade items.  Sometimes I think the US is ripe for a return of old fashioned master craftsmen.  We have piles of mass produced goods that are either in high demand or no one wants, there's no in between.

all the physical stuff is made in China. All the services stuff is from India. About the only domestic stuff left is going to be farm workers and hotel room cleaners.
