Gentoo has tried my patience once too often I think. As soon as I get my new machine I'm going back to Debianland. Unless someone can convince me that I've done something wrong, which really is no excuse for the state in which Gentoo has left my system.

Due to Gentoo issues, this diary is brought to you by Lynx.

Writing a big rant in lynx is difficult. I keep losing track of my thoughts, so I'll keep it brief.

Basically, I've been slowly installing software updates over the last couple of days. Tonight I started 'emerge -u sys-apps/texinfo' and went out for dinner. Now that I'm back home, it appears to have been successful, but Mozilla Firebird won't start due to shared library problems. Neither will vim. Does Gentoo have any dependency checking at all? If I wanted a system that was likely to end up in this state I would still be using Slackware.

It hurts.

Hey, that adds up by DesiredUsername (6.00 / 3) #5 Sun Jul 25, 2004 at 02:52:13 AM EST
Assuming he uses his computer for 12 hours/day, 365 days a year (and what mother's-basement-dwelling Lunix geek doesn't), that's 315 seconds saved per year, or more than 5 minutes!

revdep-rebuild or somesuch should take care of your problems.

Here's what bothers me about Gentoo by Hide The Hamster (3.50 / 2) #4 Sun Jul 25, 2004 at 02:34:29 AM EST
rather, it's not the distribution or LINUX itself for that matter, but the fact that people pronounce it as if it's spelled "Jentoo".  Look, folks.  That's a hard g sound.  It doesn't matter if the creator of the distribution pronounces it "Jentoo", it's patently incorrect.  One of these days, LINUX geeks, POW!  Right in the kisser!

The pronunciation is older than that by jacob (3.00 / 0) #6 Sun Jul 25, 2004 at 03:27:29 AM EST
