The Wisdom of Rogerborg:
If you can put up with being treated like a highly intelligent pre-schooler, then it's not so bad.  Also, you get net access and don't generally have to do any work.  Actually, it's pretty sweet, now that I think about it, as long as you have no self respect, and who here does?

Actually, my current employers are a consulting firm, so while I am the IT guy, they try not to pay anybody outside of Sales from their pocket, so on top of keeping the whole office running/fixing a bazillion issues, I get projects to work on. Billable hours. How are these projects gotten you ask? By underbidding everyone else in terms of time and money. Whose? I'm sure you can figure it out. Part-time IT guy. Hah! Yeah, that's why I was here Saturday. Because the IT responsibilities are perfectly balanced with the development work which is due this Friday.

Conservatives and the Bush '04 campaign. Yes, they really do think you're that dumb.

OMFG! by MohammedNiyalSayeed (6.00 / 2) #4 Mon Jul 19, 2004 at 02:06:21 AM EST

One side thinks the other side is TEH STOOPID! At least they're being more subtle about it than some who might accuse anyone who would support their enemy as being a complete fucking moron.

In more important news, sounds like it may be time to add a project of your own: OPERATION: GET ANOTHER JOB! Or, barring that, OPERATION: MAKE YOURSELF INVALUABLE.

you misread my comment by infinitera (6.00 / 3) #7 Mon Jul 19, 2004 at 03:15:21 AM EST
One side thinks their own constituents are stupid.

RE: Job - I did lots of resume sending and had few callbacks, and got only one offer. Nobody wants a "recent graduate" for a real position. But yeah, project MAKE SELF INVALUABLE is proceeding.

more on job by infinitera (6.00 / 1) #10 Tue Jul 20, 2004 at 02:56:02 AM EST
It's not the work sucks per se, it's just that the two folks I report to each have different (and whack) expectations. The Dev manager thinks he has 100% of my time, and the Sales/Marketing people who need the support think they have 50% of my time. That's 60 hours/week minimum. That shit ain't right.

is that mocking or snide sympathy? by infinitera (3.00 / 0) #12 Mon Jul 26, 2004 at 07:38:01 AM EST
I mean, meetable expectations would be ok, regardless of difficulty. I've also worked before graduating full-time, and often had difficult but meetable goals - of course, that was purely within development teams, reporting to programmers. It's not like I'm expecting an easy ride here, just some realism.

if you want an old school republican in office, vote for Kerry. If you want a radical who spends like armageddon is tomorrow, vote for Bush. I am confused, man.
This may be the first class war in history where the victims will die laughing.

The Wisdom of a Godloving Snail:
Testers are handy, and essential if you're actually trying to build something reliable. But they're only any use if you have a sensible methodology that you actually stick to to some degree.

Here, our testers are pretty much useless because we don't analyse or design properly. You can't really test the app formally because nobody actually knows what the app is supposed to do. Specifications are basically handed down through oral tradition from person to person, and it rarely happens that the Original Progenitor still works for the company.
