Thermocouple died in my water heater. Picked an awkward time for it. My girlfriend (who decided to shower second) was unhappy.

I was also unhappy, because it did it the morning that we were headed for a vacation in Florida (at the same time as webwench, but I gather she was up north while I was down in the Keys). Not a big problem there, but it meant that I didn't have a chance to look at it then, and when I got home at 11PM a few days later I also didn't have a chance to look for it.

Cold showers are actually kind of nice when you're in the Keys since the "cold" water isn't terribly so having been piped down quite a distance. A cold shower in Chicago after you get back is a whole different creature.

Anyway, figured it was almost certainly a bad thermocouple, and since those are $5-10 I just snagged a new one (in the next size up - manufacturers use odd sizes, the replacements are all 18, 24, 30, etc. inches and you can just coil the extra) and spent some time trying to get the old one out.

And some more time.

Laying on my back, looking at the ceiling, with my left hand stuck through the little hole in the bottom of the water heater, operating by touch and not having much luck.

Finally ended up just pulling the old one out by its connector cable (it was a slide-in, some are screwed in and just pulling is probably a bad approach for those) on the basis that if that didn't work, I was going to have to either call a plumber or remove the entire pilot assembly anyways, so why not?

Since that worked I now have hot water, have replaced one, and feel resonably safe about doing the same up at my parents' place if they need it done.

... I thought you'd named your pet hamster "Thermocouple". Try rereading this diary in light of this...

How were the Keys? by yankeehack (6.00 / 1) #2 Thu Jul 15, 2004 at 01:49:13 AM EST
It appears likely that someone and I might be in south Florida for my birthday and I'd like to go down to the Keys if he doesn't melt in the sunshine and heat the views are pretty.

Fun, but hot and humid by fencepost (3.00 / 0) #3 Thu Jul 15, 2004 at 04:31:36 AM EST
But there was always a decent breeze, and spending some time in the lagoon or pool was a nice way to cool off. I'm a pasty white northern boy, so I avoided sitting out in the sun.

If you're looking at doing dolphin stuff, look at the Dolphin Research Center in Marathon. They do "swims" and "splashes" where you're in the water with the dolphins. The swims had all the same stuff as the splash, but you're actually in the water instead of standing on a waist-deep platform. The swims also had folks pushed across the area then brought back holding onto the dorsal fin. They open up reservations in advance at the beginning and middle of each month, so they probably started accepting reservations for mid- to late- August today. The splashes have decent availability and you may be able to just walk in during the week, but the swims sell out fast so if you have definite plans for a date call ASAP to make a reservation.
