Print Story Wacky spam

First there was weird Chinese fax-spam. Recently I've received more interesting ones, that I reproduce here. I have no idea what the first one is selling. The second intersperses "top quality software" with stories of an arsonist and an escaped giant cat. I've also won two national lotteries in the past two weeks.

Additionally, this diary includes non-spam content about my success on ebay.

Ebay success

I made my first ebay purchase this morning. I am now the owner of a Yess DVB-T1288 digital set-top box. From the manufacturer's "profilo" on their website:

  • CDVBT1288 is a high cost-effective digital terrestrial receiver with powerful single chip processor.
  • It can memorize program parameters when power-off.
  • The features of Electronic Program Guide display and auto network search make it convenient to receive terrestrial digital TV signal.
  • Equipped with the latest technology and design, the receiver is ensured to offer high reliability and stability.
My winning bid was $147.50, which is cheaper than most. Yesterday none sold for less than $150, with the most expensive being $162.50. Strange how people are willing to pay so much, considering there are several identical items on sale every day. I guess people get carried away. I made my winning bid 15 seconds before the auction ended. :)

This afternoon I'm after a universal remote control. There are many on offer since they are frequently listed in lots of 12 to be resold. Most of the controls look pretty crappy though. However, I've found one that looks good, with big channel up/down and volume up/down buttons. An identical one sold yesterday for $11.19, which seems reasonable.

This one appears tame, Smith said, but could be dangerous because wild animals are unpredictable. People should not approach it, nor should they run away from the animal since that could provoke a chase. The best thing to do is ignore it, keep away from it and call the authorities, he g to tales circulating the wooded neighborhood off, the animal walked up to a man as he was swinging his toddler in the back yard. The cat is said to have lunged at the child. As the story goes, the man fended it off with a chair, his wife grabbed their child, and they ran into the house. The cat sat on their back deck for a while looking in, just like at the In another tale on a different street, a teenage baby sitter was at the backyard pool with an 8-year-old boy and his cousin. The cat sneaked up on them from behind, and she jumped into the pool with the boy. They swam to the other side, but it followed them. They all ran into the house, and the cat sat looking in the door.

The first spam. by i (6.00 / 1) #1 Sun Jun 06, 2004 at 08:37:57 PM EST
It's apparently a list of Israeli "trance" (whatever that is) musicians.

I feel superior with all that completely useless knowledge. I probably never heard a single beat from any of those people in my entire life.

But surely? by Metatone (5.50 / 2) #2 Sun Jun 06, 2004 at 08:46:59 PM EST
You are familiar with the works of DJ Segev's brother.. DJ Segfault?

Aaah, thanks for your research. I wonder if there's a large market for Israeli trance in the spam industry. I suppose it's probably similar in market size to other spam I've received, such as Molded Rubber Products, or even Planes, Trains, & Automobiles! What do they all have in common? They all need SUPERIOR LUBRICATION!!.

that the site behind this spam has been apparently shut down (URL omitted to protect the guilty). And a good thing too, because (1) they spam and (2) google sez there used to be this bit of javascript on their home page:

if(navigator.appVersion.indexOf("MSIE 6.")==-1){
    alert("We're fucking idiots and we wouldn't know proper web design if it hit us over the head with a 2x4")
    document.location.href = "http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/download.asp";
}

(The alert text might be slightly altered.)

Serves them well, that.
