Had an excellent holiday. Now I'm back at work. There are 86 unread diaries on my hotlist.

Inside: Brief holiday stuff, work, car, ISP

Holiday

Had an excellent time in Europe (Britain, Ireland, Spain, France, Italy). In general, things worked out really well which I think is somewhat surprising having done all the planning ourselves. We got back on Friday morning. Shortly I'll get some photos uploaded, then I'll start writing up my diary.

I picked up my photos on Sunday. Film, not digital. My SLR camera takes much better photos than my crappy digital camera ever has. By Sunday evening they had fingerprints on them from my fiancée's relatives. I hate that.

Work

Not doing much. I've just finished code reviewing some particularly nasty code written by people who have apparently never seen the coding standard. While I was away, an email went around reminding everyone of our internet usage policy. I'd never paid much attention to it before. The policy is:

  • Personal email is ok as long as it is not excessive (where "excessive" is undefined).
  • No personal web usage is allowed.
Except they take about eight pages to state it. What an interesting policy.

Car

Despite instructing my mum to run my car while I was away, the battery was flat by the time I got home. I put a battery charger on it, but it could not be saved and I had to buy a new one. Damn thing died only a few days after the warranty ran out.

ISP

iinet were giving me the shits yesterday. I let my account expire while on holiday, then had it reactivated after I got back. I also changed plans. The new plan is $19.95 per month, so that should have been my internet bill.

First they tried to charge me $27.50 for the month I was away, and $40 for the new plan. Then they gave me a $15 "good-will gesture" so I only had to pay $12.50 for the unused month. Then somehow my bill changed to $32.81. I'm not sure how. Eventually it was all sorted out, and I've been left with a single bill for $19.95. Good.

Other

Haven't done much of interest since I got back. Two lightbulbs in my house have blown, which is unusual for a 5 day period. Tonight I'll finally get to see Kill Bill 2. Should be good.

So which part of the world did you enjoy the most?

These are a few of my favourite things by sven (6.00 / 1) #4 Thu May 06, 2004 at 11:56:32 AM EST
I really enjoyed so many places it's hard to pick one. Britain was really good, I need to go back and see more. York in particular was very interesting. Barcelona was excellent, especially Gaudi's amazing Sagrada Familia. Paris and London had so many things to see it's impossible to do them all. And Rome has such amazing history everywhere you look.

BTW, what's happened to your diary? :)

I am envious I havent seen that part of the world yet. One of my wife's friends is German and has to head back soon, she offered for us to stay with her when we went to Europe, I said, "How about a work visa with that offer?"

BTW, what's happened to your diary? :)

I got pissed off at Rogerborg replying to my every comment so stopped participating for a while, stopped writing too. But lately have been writing again. I have a diary about 5000 words long ready. I may end up publishing it soon.

Is business web usage allowed? by georgeha (3.00 / 0) #2 Thu May 06, 2004 at 12:15:49 AM EST
No web would seriously handicap me in my job.
