I finally convinced iPhoto to post my GDC photos. I wrote a brief summary of the "By The Book roundtable, but Firebird ate it, and seeing as the moderator's write up (see that last link) is a fairly accurate reflection of the event, I can't be bothered to write it again.

Also: Hello Alex!

Inside: Very specific networking problems.

Can anybody tell me why iDisk and iSync do not work over a WLAN connection to an iMac running OS X Panther with the Firewall turned on sharing a Chello internet connection.

Apple seem to claim that as iDisk uses WebDAV then as long as you can view websites you must be able to use iDisk, and that a firewall that lets you view websites cannot be a problem with iDisk.

Which is clearly lies, as when I use their firewall software on their operating system using their internet sharing software running on their hardware I cannot access their servers.

So can somebody tell me what port(s) iDisk/iSync really use?

I am a programmer, not a networking geek. I just want the damn system to work. :(

R* IP by codemonkey uk (3.00 / 0) #4 Fri Apr 02, 2004 at 04:56:07 AM EST
No R* IP on "personal mobile devices". Not even an IMAP account configuration in the mail client.

After all these politics and lurve diaries, that was probably the geekiest thing I've read on here for about 6 weeks!

Don't use .Mac export. by ObviousTroll (5.00 / 1) #8 Fri Apr 02, 2004 at 06:09:41 AM EST
Get "Better HTML Export" generate the HTML and manually copy it into your iDisk. Presto, as many pix as you want in the slide show.

Alternately, suck it up and split your photos into two groups and publish each group.

Technical diary on efficient collision detection, specifically whether it's worthwhile using an underlying height field as well as arbitrary above-ground objects (e.g. the GTA III L track and raised roofs) in a realistic game world.  I've been wondering about that one.

heightfields by codemonkey uk (6.00 / 1) #11 Fri Apr 02, 2004 at 08:48:12 AM EST
Height-fields are not typically used outside outdoor/landscape engines, and even then not universally. I've not written a collision engine myself, but most systems I've heard described use some kind of hierarchical spatially partitioned system of geometric volumes. It's certainly not a topic I could write about with any real authority.

Damn...your politeness in greeting me has forced me to get my lazy ass in gear and sign up...not sure if you will read this as on an older diary, if you do, hello to you sir.
