or is it firedog? No, wait! Firebird? No, that's not it... firefox, damn it!

I must vent about this!

I am downloading RedHat 7.3 ISOs because NISTNet won't build on anything newer than RH 8. And we all know about RH 8, don't we? Knowing that I barely have enough room on C: drive for the swap file as it is, I instruct Firefox to load files onto the G: drive with ample disk space. Roughly 300MB and an hour later Firefox informs me that C:/Documents and Settings/bla/bladi/bla/ has no room.

Argh! No kidding! That's why I told you to put it into G:/downloads/ instead of some temporary storage space! Double Argh!

Must resist typing all caps. Must resist...

Anyway, I am googling to find the super secret setting that will change this behavior. Any of you Mozilla/Firefox geeks know a fix?

I'm going to try setting browser.download.useDownloadDir to true and browser.download.defaultFolder to G:/downloads and see what happens

It probably stores some data intermediately. by Canthros (3.00 / 0) #3 Mon Mar 08, 2004 at 02:04:28 PM EST
Truth is, if you're that crunched for space on C:, you probably ought to move the Documents and Settings folders wholecloth, or at least the one for your user.

Move by vnsnes (3.00 / 0) #4 Mon Mar 08, 2004 at 02:29:58 PM EST
What do you mean by "move the Documents and Settings wolders"?

Prompted by your post, I found some info that would let you specify a different profiles folder by editing registry entries. I am trying it now.

Well, if you're using Win2K by Canthros (6.00 / 1) #6 Mon Mar 08, 2004 at 02:34:15 PM EST
You waltz into the control panel -> Users, bring up your username, and there's some fiddling under there that will allow you to specify where the user's profile and data should be stored. It's not the sort of thing I mess around with much, so I'm not certain about the wheres and whats.

too easy by vnsnes (3.00 / 0) #7 Mon Mar 08, 2004 at 02:52:41 PM EST
Control Panel is too easy to use apparently because MS KB article 249694 makes sure that at least two registry entries are modified for the changes to make effect. I wound up changing the user profile path, which didn't move any files, which means that all my previous user preferences are gone. Regardless, it seems to be working, and this installation is history. As you point out, having this little space is not a good idea.

You need copy files manually. by Canthros (5.00 / 1) #8 Mon Mar 08, 2004 at 05:40:59 PM EST
Changing the user profile path only changes where it expects the files to be, after all. The most significant bits will probably be in the Desktop, My Documents and Application Settings folders. Application Settings is hidden, so that may be one of the things you're missing.

Might also keep an eye out for user registries. I'm not clear on how Windows handles that bit of nonsense.

Tools->Options->Downloads by applespank (3.00 / 0) #9 Mon Mar 08, 2004 at 08:09:07 PM EST
check "Ask me where to save every file".

that doesn't work by vnsnes (3.00 / 0) #10 Mon Mar 08, 2004 at 10:39:51 PM EST
I've done that and specified to save in G:/downloads/ but the behavior is still the same: while the download proceeds the file is temporarily saved in user profile temp directory. Once the transfer has completed the file is moved to the directory specified in Tool->Options->Downloads. By default Windows uses C:/Documents and Settings/username/etc/etc/etc  for user profiles path.

Ah, I see by applespank (3.00 / 0) #11 Wed Mar 10, 2004 at 10:55:32 AM EST
If you right click on the link and select "Save link to disc..." the file will download directly to the directory you specify, as opposed to downloading to the temp directory and moving it when the download is finished.

I'm sure there's a perfectly logical reason why web browsers transfer to temp and move, but I find it irritating.
