What I'm Reading: "The Far Side of the World". What I'm Watching.

Poll: Continue watching "Aqua Teen Hunger Force"?

What I'm Reading
Breaking my plan to read the Aubrey/Maturin books in order once again, I read The Far Side of the World. Rationalization: I've already seen the film, so it doesn't matter. Actuality: the film has very little relation to this book. The film seemed to take a lot more from the "Master and Commander", except that it happens to be set on the far side of the world.

Good book though: the usual shenanigans. Ending was a little anticlimactic: could have done with a lot more on What Happened Next; especially what's going to happen to those treacherous Yanks and whether the war really is over. Tempting to mess up my chronology even more and go for the next one in the series.

Interesting to see that the book has several female characters, including a rescue by an implausible Polynesian catamaran with an all-female crew in appropriate dress. Dunno how Peter Weir got away with omitting that bit: lucky for him studio execs don't read.

What I'm Watching
Obtained a few episodes of this Aqua Teen Hunger Force thing everyone's going on about. Wasn't that impressed by the first one. First episodes / pilots are usually pretty crappy though Should I watch some more and hope it gets better?

I might have just lost my sense of humour though. I still like the Simpsons, but gave up on South Park after sitting through a couple of recent-ish ones without a single chuckle.

I think I'll have to download some Futurama series 2 or 3: only saw a couple of episodes but liked them. That ought to tell me whether I should just give up on comedy.

is somewhat uneven, especially early on, but possesses moments of undeniable brilliance. The best episodes from the first season are Bus of the Undead, Mayhem of the Mooninites, and MC Pee Pants. You should also watch Dumber Dolls, from the second season, which is the best thing I've ever seen on TV.

Aqua Teen peaked about a year ago.  Now the writing just seems to be a competition to be as nonsensical and abusive as possible.  Stupid and stoned space aliens is only funny so many times.

Interfection is my favorite episode.

I found. . . by Lost In A Dream (5.00 / 1) #10 Thu Feb 26, 2004 at 01:17:57 PM EST

Aqua Teen really wasn't funny for me until I'd seen several episodes. Then, the jokes started getting funnier and funnier and funnier. There's a lot of "in" jokes that you just won't pick up on the first time you see them. By the fourth of fifth episode, it seems much funnier. Now I can go back and see the first episodes I saw and think they are hilarious.

Though I will say some of the later episodes are walking the line on overboard, they are still fairly funny. Especially for anything on TV.

What? by Scrymarch (5.00 / 1) #2 Thu Feb 26, 2004 at 11:19:51 AM EST
an implausible Polynesian catamaran

The movie was more historically accurate than the books?  And Weir released a Director's Cut shorter than the original (Picnic at Hanging Rock).  Are no stereotypes sacred?

The catamaran just seemed to turn up in the middle of the ocean at a surprisingly convenient moment, just as our heroes are about to drown.

The catamaran's not implausible by notafurry (6.00 / 1) #6 Thu Feb 26, 2004 at 11:27:11 AM EST
The crew is.

Polynesian islanders had quite sophisticated boats at that point in history, and a catamaran would be an obvious choice for them; no complex industry or curved woods to make proper hulls, but two straight trunks and some short lumber make a fine catamaran hull. (Though it would probably be properly called a "proa".)

However, even by the standards of the islanders, an all-female crew is a bit of a stretch.

Apparently they were escaping the evils of patriarchy, after some unknown but presumably horrific incident.

Kick-arse back-of-the-coconut-envelope astronomy too, as I recall.  I seem to remember reading that the colonisation of the Pacific required many voyages of the same scale as Bligh's famous open-boat trek after the mutiny of the Bounty.

Bad choice of quote I guess.

Futurama==good by gazbo (5.00 / 1) #3 Thu Feb 26, 2004 at 11:21:58 AM EST
South Park == teh suck.  People keep telling me about these brilliant episodes, but it seems that 90% of them are just lame.

Watch the damn show, already.

Also, this Witch Hunter Robin show on Adult Swim is quite boring.
I feel cheated by the teasers.

Ditch Aqua Teen Hunger Force by Nutbutter Jim (5.00 / 1) #11 Thu Feb 26, 2004 at 11:45:46 PM EST
And pick up some Family Guy or Clone High.
