Scoop

Longstanding scoop bug fixed.

You can now use :) as a comment subject title, without it telling you that you need to enter a subject title.

Oh yeah, and it now supports UTF-8 characters pretty much throughout.

Although I've not checked polls yet, I bet they're going to break.

I've been using "оÑ?терегайÑ?Ñ? тёмной Ñ?тороны" to test it, but I don't have a clue what it meens. It bet it's something horrible :)

If your browser does not support UTF-8, sorry. I suppose some handhelds might not, but very few servers are using pure ASCII now.

dumb question by sasquatchan (3.00 / 0) #3 Tue Nov 30, 2004 at 03:54:22 AM EST
just to show my ignorance. Isn't it just a matter of having "Content-type encoding: UTF8" (well that's MIME) so "text/html; charset=UTF-8" in the HTML ? Unless scoop does something stupid like writing their own HTML parser, isn't that all one needs for UTF8 encoding ?

(And expect Japan to come back and bitch because they don't want everything to be in UTF8, they want native shift-jis support and EUC etc. cheeky bastards. Play by the rules. Thankfully that task was re-assigned to someone other than me.. )

Heh by hulver (6.00 / 1) #4 Tue Nov 30, 2004 at 03:59:18 AM EST
To a point.

Certain bits of the scoop code did "things" to the characters, assuming that it was ASCII.

Which, when scoop was written, it all was. It did things like removing certain High-bit characters.

The auto-format code used to do things like setting the high bit on a character, and then removing it later.

All things which you just can't do with UTF-8.

The little double-down-arrow thingies that in dynamic mode pop open a whole tree of comments seems to be broken. I first noticed it last night at home, but also notice it today at work. It looks to call a javascript function, togglelist() .

I'm sure there's an interesting point in there somewhere, if this were a psychology class.

Other people don't seem to be affected. I can see some 6 rated comments.
