Does it bug anyone else that you can't search for "C++" on Google? There's a new search engine - sensis.com.au - that's been advertising a bit on TV recently. So I tried them, and their top match for "C++" was AC Milan Official Site. Advertising a search engine on TV still seems a bit strange to me.

Inside: Cynicism, promotion, the Belgian

Cynicism

I've been feeling very cynical at work recently. The slipping schedules, arbitrary deadlines, and promised improvements that amount to nothing are getting to me. Today we hear that the entire project will probably slip another six weeks; not much in the scheme of things. The project manager suggested we might be able to get some training out of the slack time. The wisdom in training people at the end of the project is lost on me.

There will never be any C++ training anyway. I want to be a C++ guru, but it's difficult being surrounded by C monkeys. I do the best I can to educate myself, but there's only so much one can achieve without working alongside other gurus, seeing how they work, and having a critical eye watching over one's work.

We talk about improving our engineering processes. Using third party tools to increase the quality of our software, sharing more between projects, stricter processes for critical components. Meanwhile our project rolls on, a huge juggernaut. Inevitably there will come one arbitrary day where these great ideas are imposed retrospectively on our project, and we'll need a huge effort to implement the well-meaning changes. There will be no rejoicing, only pain.

Promotion?

The project manager left an offer on my desk, written on a piece of paper ripped out of a notepad. SAFETY ENGINEER BID #1 it said on the front. Inside, the generous offer. 1x CRUNCHIE. 1x BEER } PER WEEK.

Belgian Beer Cafe

The highlight of my week was taking my sister along to the Belgian on the weekend as part of her birthday extravaganza, and it was as good as always. I started with a large Hoegaarden (how do they make their large glasses look so large???) then moved onto a Leffe Blond, and finished with two bottles of Hoegaarden Forbidden Fruit. I was asked for ID on my third drink. "Wow", said the bar chick. "You're older than I am." Every time I'm asked for ID I take note, because one day it will be the last. Seven years of being asked, and still going strong. I like to watch their faces when they check my date of birth, just to catch the look of surprise.

Other

Played tennis and tenpin bowling last Saturday. Met the wedding celebrant on Monday and did lots of paperwork. Mum's planning a holiday in Rome, with a stopover in Dubai on the way. One of the guys from work went to Sydney this afternoon for a meeting, he's coming back tomorrow evening. A huge waste of money? $3.50 chicken rice for lunch continues to impress. I don't see my fiancée until Saturday due to her shifts. A small area of my house smells like wet towels. I can't work out why.

The first hit you get is about Visual something... must be broken.

Cheers.

I think Firefox's search bar removes '+' characters - you can get around it with quotes, I think.

On another note, the Myers and Sutter books are pretty practical C++ staples (check out ACCU for reviews)... have you read these? I still haven't worked with anyone who can advance my C++ either [ :( ] but there are good books out there.

Used to be a time I'd recommend the C++ User's Journal as well, but I let my subscription lapse after all the good authors seemed to leave. You can get more out of the web site's 'experts forum' archives...

And if you need help, Usenet (in particular comp.lang.c++.moderated and comp.lang.c++) are very useful.

I knew that was a problem, but I thought that entering it directly into Google was broken as well. I was wrong.

No. I will put down "increased access to technical literature" on my professional development form again, and see if I can push to get copies of these. I can't afford to buy them myself. :(

Maybe it's because you're already pretty damn good?

Fuel my bowling obsession.

Scores by sven (6.00 / 1) #5 Wed Oct 20, 2004 at 02:36:14 AM EST
Tennis: Lost 7-5 6-2. It was closer than the score suggests.

Bowling: 157 in both games. I was averaging 182 when I was bowling weekly last year. This year I've only been three times; the rest of my team stopped bowling and I never tried to find another.

That is a big drop; I remember the scores you used to post and they were much higher than that, as you say.  How come the team stopped bowling?

The team by sven (6.00 / 1) #8 Wed Oct 20, 2004 at 03:01:19 AM EST
One of the team was a primary school teacher. She was assigned to a school 70km south-west of Perth, so it was impossible for her to make it. Another said he couldn't afford to keep going every week. The third didn't really want to keep going now that two of his mates had stopped (another had stopped going six months earlier due to a shoulder injury).

Is shooting fish in a barrel supposed to be easy?

Cause I was thinking it might be quite hard.
In fact there might only be one fish in the barrel and you can't see through the barrel.
It would be extremely hard!

Unless....

The fish was huge and barrel shaped!

We went keger bowling last weekend by cam (3.00 / 0) #12 Wed Oct 20, 2004 at 06:51:56 PM EST
Was pretty cool, it has smaller balls and nine pins in a diamond. It also has a small starting alleay which then widens about half way down. They play number games with it.

sensis by sien (3.00 / 0) #16 Thu Oct 21, 2004 at 11:09:35 AM EST
Have you had any success with locality searching with them? That is something that Australia is missing.

As far as process improvement goes, good luck! It's really easy to plan for process improvement, doing it is something else.

Locality searching by sven (3.00 / 0) #17 Thu Oct 21, 2004 at 03:17:01 PM EST
Never tried it, never had a need to. If I'm looking for a business, I'll use yellowpages.com.au (which is run by sensis anyway). Works well enough for me. Otherwise I don't really care about location.
