Terribly disorganised at the moment. To give you an idea of how badly, there is a Divine Comedy gig this evening and I do not have a ticket.

Hopefully there will still be some on sale.

Made yummy carbonara yesterday evening, with egg, not cream. I think the bit of grated nutmeg makes all the difference. That and nice bacon (pancetta). And absolutely not letting the pan near the heat while the egg mixture is added to the pasta. Oh, you atkins adherents, is life really worth living without carbohydrate?

I am reading some phenomenally boring documents. I wonder about the etiquette of sending a copy of Strunk and White to all tender respondents with an audio-file of 'Bzzzt! Try Again.' To be fair, it is not the respondents' fault but rather seems an inbuilt hazard of this method of obtaining goods and services. I too can be responsible for similar crimes against plain english, although this time in the cause of strategic planning.

Still reading Neal Stephenson. I am increasingly reminded of the film The Agony and the Ecstacy, particularly the Pope's line. When will there be an end? (Answer, in about another 500 pages).

With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse.

But still, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral, You are the very model of a modern Major-Eng.Lit.

Been using keyboards for too long. by Evil Cloaked User (3.00 / 0) #5 Wed Oct 20, 2004 at 02:08:33 AM EST
I had to fill in time sheets yesterday. In order to avoid said agony in future, I've decided to actually start using my diary (as in the paper one). MDB saw it open on my desk at home last night and realised that she'd never before seen my handwriting. I believe "under-developed" was the adjective of choice.

The Agony and the Ecstasy always sounds wrong as I knew The Agony is the Ecstasy (b/w Drunk on the Popes Blood) (Lydia Lunch/Birthday Party) first. Which lead me today to look up what Lydia Lunch is doing at the moment. And found she's got a new album out on Nov 1. Not only that, but it is similar to Queen of Siam in style so have added to my shopping list.

Thanks go to Merekat for that.

I thank those who have slogged through Stephenson by georgeha (3.00 / 0) #2 Wed Oct 20, 2004 at 01:34:07 AM EST
so that I don't have too. After Quicksilver, I lost taste for his rambling tomes, plus I have better uses for the money. Maybe when the latest hits the library, or comes out in paperback.

Try a bit of nutmeg in a cheese ommlette. It is the way to go.

nutmeg by komet (3.00 / 0) #6 Wed Oct 20, 2004 at 02:40:29 AM EST
is a hallucinogen, apparently. Perhaps that's why it tastes good.

it doesn't taste so good, but just makes you think it does?

I have to admit, I gave up halfway through Quicksilver. I remember I really liked Cryptonomicon, but for some reason I couldn't hack the new stuff. There's only so many spurious anecdotes and meandering, pointless conversations I can take before I just scream "get to the plot".

I lent it to a friend of mine who has a lot of patience and an appetite for detail, and he thoroughly enjoyed it, so I'm glad my purchase wasn't a total waste.
