Brief synopsis: Penny Arcade readers (gamers all) donate $200,000 USian dollars worth of brand new toys to a sick childrens' hospital. The local press weasels sent a single camera guy to record the delivery. The article reports that a local catholic school donates nearly $1000 worth of toys.
I mean, the fuck? How could anyone with the intellectual capacity of an artichoke look at this and think "$1000"? That's sixty four Gamecubes right there. Sixty four. That's over $6,000 for starters, and that's just a teeny, tiny part of it. There must be a thousand dollars worth of lego in this picture! This is the truck they used to empty a garage full of toys and move them to a warehouse. The garage filled up again the next day. They delivered a warehouse full of toys and a giant cheque for $27,000 - all from gamers - and the media reported it as a thousand dollars from a catholic school.
This confirms my own experience with the pond scum of the media. I really wish more people would have the opportunity to deal with them first hand, as it might lead to fewer paedatricians being lynched.
For those who haven't had the pleasure, the media works like this. The front page stuff is mostly based on events that actually happened. Anything on the inside pages is a complete fabrication. Your name, images and any other content or quotes that you provide are used to illustrate a completely fictitious story that will co-incide with the truth only if it happens to be what the advertisers that pay the hack's wages wanted to see anyway. Oh, and the BBC aren't immune any more. By trying to emulate a commercial organisation, they've dropped their standards just as low, and create whatever story they need.
Please remember this the next time you pick up the Daily Rag. $200,000 from gamers became $1000 from a catholic school, simply because the truth wasn't convenient. For once, I do not exaggerate or wax hyperbolic: the media are lying, lazy scum. Don't give them material, don't trust them, don't believe them. If you absolutely must deal with them, factor in the cost of a publicist and a lawyer. If you want to see the truth broadcast, or at least the lie that you want told, then you will need them. The truth don't come cheap any more.
