Print Story A lazy day
Diary

Not too long ago I was thinking about having dessert. Then I realised I hadn't had dinner yet. Oops. So I fired up the barbeque, put some food on it, and cooked myself up a banquet. Chops, a sausage, mushroom, and potato. An excellent meal.

Inside: Waking up, barbeques, downloading music, printing digital photos

Waking up

When I woke up this morning, A was in bed next to me. That was a nice surprise. I don't think she had been there long.

Barbeques

What is it about a barbeque that makes it so good? Where cooking on a stove is a chore, cooking on a barbeque is a pleasure. When I'm barbequeing, I'll quite happily stand and watch it for twenty minutes, moving it around, turning it, and generally fussing over it. I never do that on a stove.

My barbeque was a Christmas gift from my fiancé. I think it might just be the Best Gift Ever.

Sidenote: Dictionary.com claims that it should be spelt barbecue. I disagree. The barbeque was bought from Barbeques Galore, and they should know. HuSi doesn't seem to approve of either.

Downloading music

I've finally got around to downloading the Mix Tape that jacob put together. I think it's a fantastic idea. I'm only up to track 5 so far (I'm only on dialup unfortunately). Some of the music I like, and some I don't. The first track, The Thermals' No Culture Icon reminds me a bit of Placebo. I'm not sure why.

Printing digital photos

I've been meaning to get some digital photos printed for ages. This evening I finally got around to burning them onto CD, so I can take them into work. Then I'll upload them to Big W, and in approximately four business days I'll be able to collect them. When Big W will do them for $0.47 per print, it seems pointless to buy a printer.

But I am thinking about getting a scanner so that I can scan in the prints from my 35mm SLR camera. I'm considering getting the CanoScan LiDE 30, but I'll probably consider it for a while longer though. I should get a photo album too.

I like photography. Photography is good.

Man like fire, pointy stick and meat. Man like to cook like caveman, with a cold pint in hand.

BBQ'ing by cam (3.00 / 0) #2 Sat Jan 17, 2004 at 03:14:55 AM EST
The Americans call bbq a mixture of pork offal with a heavy tomato sauce. It is not cool. An outdoor fire on charcoal is called grilling. We got a pot belly grill when me moved into this house. I have been using it to death.

In Australia we bbq'ed with wood fires, but here people seem to cook with charcoal briquettes. Took me a while to get used to how to get the fire going but now I do it all the time.

An American tradition is grilling in the snow. That is great, it is fun to watch the fire, turn the snags and steaks while snow is falling or snow is on the ground. The US doesnt sell sausages like Australia but I have found Wisconsin Beer Brauts. They are good, they give them a good soaking of Wisconsin beer as well. ... marinate.

Digital photos, etc. by The Jews (3.00 / 0) #3 Sat Jan 17, 2004 at 04:39:19 AM EST
For general reference, I highly recommend Norman Koren's website.

My "workflow" is 35mm scanned with an Epson 1660 Photo at the highest dpi, edited with STOIK PictureMan, then given off for printing at a photo lab place (they have a magical machine that converts a digital file into an actual photo print, not an inkjet print). I am wary of the Walmart printing labs, as I think they are run by monkeys and I have no idea what printers they have, making it hard to use colour management.

My ideal workflow (this is fantasy at this point) would be either starting with a digital SLR like the D1H or the D2H or maybe a good film camera like an F5 or a Leica M6, then scanning it with a Minolta DiMage Dual Scan III, then printing it all on an Epson 2200 or R800.

Fantastic site by sven (3.00 / 0) #4 Sat Jan 17, 2004 at 01:51:03 PM EST
I've bookmarked that site - it looks excellent. At first glance there seems to be a huge amount of information on there.

I was reading a bit about scanners on there and somehow ended up at hp.com. The Scanjet 3970 looks good for my budget, at US$99 (that's AU$128). So then I looked at the same scanner on a local computer retailer's page - AU$363! We are seriously being ripped off in this country. Of course, I'd rather have the Minolta if I could afford it.

I'm also a bit wary of trusting Big W to print photos, but for only $0.47 per print it seems worthwhile to try them. If they don't do a good job, I'll pay more for someone reputable next time.
