Today I found myself getting up at 4:30am to go to Sydney again. As is our usual method of meticulous planning, I was told about this trip at lunchtime yesterday.

Inside: Parents' dinner, performance reviews, flight

Parents' Dinner

Last night my mum and sister were around at my fiancé's place meeting her family. It was quite pleasant and unremarkable really. We keep finding strange crossings of paths though:

  • A and I were in the same class for an extension course when we were 10.
  • One of our primary school teachers has taught both of us at different times.
  • A visited my primary school when we were 12 as part of the school band.
  • A's sister remembered my sister from giving her a haircut five years ago.
  • A's dad used to live in the same town where my mum used to live. It's a very small town called Gnowangerup, so this is more of a coincidence than it might appear.

Performance Reviews

I was meant to have my performance review at work today, but I'm in Sydney so it's going to be on Monday instead. My tech lead has suggested that I should come up with examples in each of the categories that I'm rated on so that he can easily justify giving me a good mark.

There are some strange categories in the review. It ranges from things like "Quality of Work" and "Planning and Implementation" to "Business Acumen" and "Organisational Information". Even so, I'll probably have a quick look at it tonight and have a think about it. It's good that we've been given the opportunity to contribute positively to the review process.

Flight

I was flying with hand-luggage only today, which always makes things quicker. I checked in at economy class this morning, because the business class queue was longer. The check-in agent reminded me that I can check-in at business class if I want to. It was nice of him to point that out.

We were flying on a 737-800 today. I don't like them as much as the A320s, they feel less roomy. I was down the back in row 17. There was a small child in that row, which is usually not a good sign. But today the child was quiet and well behaved (and not vomiting like the last one). Amazing! There was a bit of turbulence coming into Sydney, but not too bad. We arrived on time, and I grabbed some lunch at Hungry Jack's, then went straight to work.

Weather

In Perth today it's 37 degrees. In Sydney it's 25. Being in Sydney is not all bad.

How to make me homesick by cam (3.00 / 0) #1 Tue Jan 13, 2004 at 10:45:18 PM EST
Weather is always a good one. 25C in Sydney. It is -3C here at the moment. Another thing that regularly makes me homesick is hearing the noisy bush in the background on Australian shows, like nature shows. There is always some kind of cacaphony going on. By contrast the US woods can be very quiet, especially in winter. I guess there isnt the large number of loud and noisy Cockatoo's, Rosella's etc in the US.

It is funny what triggers off homesickness, it is small odd things.

I wish it were -3 C, it was -20 C this morning by georgeha (6.00 / 1) #2 Wed Jan 14, 2004 at 12:30:53 AM EST
-6 F, if I did my calculations right, so cold that salt doesn't melt snow.

I moved to Virginia from New Jersey. Far too cold up  there. Dont know how people in Canada or Minnesota handle it.

What part of the world you living in to have those ungodly temperatures?

Mind you the upside of Rochester is that the best beer brewers in the US are based there. Dundas Lager and Brooklyn Lager are two of my favourite beers in the US.
