Music

A mix tape, from me to you.

Here's how it works: I searched the web for places where you could download legit mp3s (mostly artists' and record labels' web sites) and found 11 tracks I really liked from 11 different artists. I arranged direct links to those tracks into what I think is a nice order. Your part of the deal is to download them from the links provided and burn them to a CD, which will then be the mix CD I have made you (but with you doing the work — I'm more of an idea rat).

This is a pretty rock'n'roll sort of mix. Hope you like it, I had fun making it.

Here are the tracks:

  1. The Thermals - No Culture Icons (The Thermals' web site)
  2. Charlie McAlister - Island of the Robot Building Monkey (Catsup Plate Records' web site)
  3. Beulah - My Horoscope Said It Would Be A Bad Year (from Tiny Telephone)
  4. Neutral Milk Hotel - Glue (a cover of a song by the Gerbils) (from the Elephant 6 collective's web page)
  5. Guided by Voices - My Kind of Soldier (from Matador Records' GbV web page)
  6. Possum Dixon - Emergency's About to End (from the official Possum Dixon web page)
  7. Pavement - Here (Peel session version) (from Matador Records' Pavement web page)
  8. The Decemberists - July, July! (from Hush Records' MP3 page)
  9. Weezer - Christmas Song (from the official Weezer web site)
  10. Agenda - Last Chance for Action! (from the RockAthens MP3 site)
  11. All-Time Quarterback - Sock Hop (from Tiny Telephone)
If you really feel like it, you ought to make a case - get a piece of paper and a sharpie and, one word per line, write STOP ROCK ALBUM in big block letters. Cut it into the size of a CD sleeve. On the other side, draw a picture of a smiley face with its tongue stuck out and some disembodied hands on either side of its face making the rock and roll hand gesture. Slip that puppy in a jewel case and you're done!

If you like any of the songs, please thank the bands who made them and their record labels for making their songs available for free.

Yeah, I'm a big fan by jacob (3.00 / 0) #4 Sun Jan 11, 2004 at 11:43:06 AM EST
I wanted to put "Holland, 1945," my favorite of theirs, on this. Alas, there's no good free version available.

Amusing by kj417 (5.00 / 1) #2 Sun Jan 11, 2004 at 11:33:41 AM EST
Interesting ... I rather like the idea, but the music itself did very little for me.

hey, roll your own then by jacob (3.00 / 0) #3 Sun Jan 11, 2004 at 11:42:10 AM EST
Democracy in action! I'd kinda hoped that other people might follow suit and we'd all get to see the sorts of things other people like.

(Though I think you at least ought to give the Thermals another listen. That song is awesome.)

I've only heard of two bands on that list by lm (3.00 / 0) #5 Sun Jan 11, 2004 at 12:05:29 PM EST
I've heard of Guided By Voices because they're a bunch of school teachers from my home town. Back home, they're usually referred to as Guided By Budweiser because of their penchant for cheap beer consumption. I never managed to get into their sound.

I've also heard of Pavement but only because a woman that my wife and I used to rent our spare room to use to constantly play some sappy song about a heart being made of gravy over and over. I'll admit to it having pretty voices, but still not my cup of tea.

And if those bands are representing the entire mix, I don't know that I'd call it a rock and roll mix. Pop music, they are.

I don't get the attraction... by gzt (3.00 / 0) #6 Sun Jan 11, 2004 at 12:13:21 PM EST
...to The Decemberists. Whenever I hear any of their songs, I can only think, "This is the most mediocre band I've ever heard and the real Decembrists were so much cooler." They make me think of the color tan. I don't understand at all, since otherwise we seem to have a relatively similar taste in crummy music.

I'm not much of a fan either. But I liked the song I used in this collection.

that song by jacob (3.00 / 0) #12 Mon Jan 12, 2004 at 02:03:20 AM EST
rocks me like a hurricane on crack[1]. I got the album on Saturday and just alternated listening to that song and the new Mountain Goats single "Palmcorder Yajna" all day. I really like it.

[1]: You know, hurricane crack. Crack specially tailored for hurricanes.

Cute idea by gazbo (3.00 / 0) #13 Mon Jan 12, 2004 at 08:39:38 AM EST
I saw this diary yesterday but only read the intro, figuring it would be the usual dross that wannabes publish as free mp3s. I see that actually there's proper bands there - I've not listened yet, but I intend to listen to at least a handful.

BTW, from Weezer's site, I approve of the a capella version of "Say it ain't so" and for laughs I like their cover of "Better off alone".

Neat mix. by Canthros (6.00 / 1) #14 Tue Jan 13, 2004 at 04:12:39 AM EST
Song 2 drives me up a wall, but there are some bands on there I need to check out now.

I'm not here, man.

song 2 by jacob (6.00 / 1) #15 Tue Jan 13, 2004 at 04:31:16 AM EST
one of those songs that's strange enough that you might love it, might not be able to stand it, or both. I included it just because it's odd enough to really stick out in my mind, and I figure that can't be all bad ...
