And which category do you spend most of your time thinking about?

Little:

  • How many calories in that donut?
  • What shall we have for dinner?
  • What's your stance on gun control?
  • Have you flossed today?
  • What's your cholesterol level?
  • Do your shoes go with your jacket?
  • How 'bout them Yankees?
  • Paper or plastic?
  • Is OJ guilty? How about Michael Jackson?
  • Is there a god?
  • Is rock dead?
  • Hot/cold/rainy/snowy/dark enough for ya?
  • Coke or Pepsi?
  • Windows or Linux?
  • Conservative or Liberal?
  • Democracy or Monarchy?
  • Do you want fries with that?

Big:

  • When was the last time that you did something that really gave meaning to your life?
  • What brings you joy?
  • Are you just wasting your time, which you'll never get back?
  • Have you ever done anything that you're really proud of?
  • Will your accomplishments ever be appreciated by anybody else?

Have a donut.

Life is just one damned thing after another.
Love is just two damned things after each other.

But what have I really accomplished by MisterQueue (6.00 / 1) #3 Tue Dec 16, 2003 at 04:24:43 AM EST
by eating a donut? Is this donut the complete expression of my life or just an image of a moment?

Does the hole signify the emptiness in my middle or is a sexual frustration? Is there glaze?

That's nothing by DesiredUsername (6.00 / 2) #11 Tue Dec 16, 2003 at 06:59:57 AM EST
I didn't even spend time reading the *big* category. Nor did I write a comment on a website about it for strangers to read.

Huh? by MisterQueue (3.00 / 0) #14 Tue Dec 16, 2003 at 08:00:57 AM EST
I'm sorry, I was much too busy looking at my own navel to read that.

I can't be bothered to check by DesiredUsername (3.00 / 0) #16 Tue Dec 16, 2003 at 08:19:37 AM EST
but I assume you replied to my wise words. Whatever expression of awe you used, you can rest assured they registered deeply with me.

But I also like to plan dinner.

I think your classification is wonky. by Canthros (3.00 / 0) #7 Tue Dec 16, 2003 at 04:45:33 AM EST
Metaphysical considerations are, almost by definition, big questions.

But I mostly think about the big things in the hours I've got to myself, and the little things are more often a concern in dealing with others.

Metaphysical questions by ENOENT (3.00 / 0) #8 Tue Dec 16, 2003 at 05:53:34 AM EST
Can you, given time, change the answer to a metaphysical question? If not, then it's not worth worrying about, and is a little question.

Life is just one damned thing after another.
Love is just two damned things after each other.

I disagree. by Canthros (3.00 / 0) #9 Tue Dec 16, 2003 at 05:59:32 AM EST
The answers to various metaphysical questions have a direct and significant impact on the way that one interacts with the world and with other people. It can even influence the way one answers the other questions you denote as 'big'.

Furthermore, although it's doubtful that one can change the nature of the underlying reality, since its nature remains largely inaccessible, one can certainly change one's mind on the matter.

One can also... by ENOENT (3.00 / 0) #13 Tue Dec 16, 2003 at 07:57:08 AM EST
change one's mind on the Coke vs. Pepsi debate, with equally dramatic results. (However, it's impossible to change your stance on the Ford trucks vs. Chevy trucks issue, except by marrying outside your faith in Detroit.)

Love is just two damned things after each other.

I've never heard of anyone getting that caught up by Canthros (3.00 / 0) #15 Tue Dec 16, 2003 at 08:04:48 AM EST
on their choice of colas. (well ... except for those  But the right answer is Coke. They may be Evil®©™, but they taste better.

Also, there's some indication that the way to go is Chevy, as they appear to be building actual trucks these days, rather than platforms for larger engines. Or so I'm told. I drive a riceburner, myself.

Those "mecca cola" folks. by Canthros (3.00 / 0) #17 Tue Dec 16, 2003 at 08:31:38 AM EST
They seemed awfully concerned about whose pop they were drinking.

I have far too little work by gzt (3.00 / 0) #10 Tue Dec 16, 2003 at 06:07:17 AM EST
so I'll write a comment.

300.
Food? Silly. If you insist on eating, maybe a soup and salad with some fresh bread. I'd need to go to the store and get some sauerkraut, though.
Every man should be able to control his gun.
Not yet.
Don't care.
Jacket? Shoes? Not at the same time. The last time I went to a cocktail party, I spiffed up and all, but went barefoot.
If they use a DH, they're not really playing baseball.
Both at the same time.
He was acquitted, and no.
Please capitalise it.
Yes, and so is pop.
Need more snow.
Coke.
I don't own a computer.
In political philosophy, I could be considered Liberal, but I rather dig Burkean ideas. In the realm of modern politics, I lean more towards the left.
False dichotomy.
Yes.

Meaning? I don't know if my life has any meaning at all. So, never have, never will.
Life, all of it, life is full of joy, can't you see that each man is an icon of Christ?
Yes.
I'm rather proud, but have done nothing of significance.
If I ever do anything, maybe. And if not, I hope I wouldn't care.

I think about the little things most of these, though I notice all of these questions are about what you think of yourself, worry about yourself, only in relation to oneself. What happened to interpersonal relations? And what happened to thinking about something without regard for one's opinion of it?

The problem with Big Picture People by Rogerborg (3.00 / 0) #12 Tue Dec 16, 2003 at 07:39:47 AM EST
Is that you have to throw your Big Mac at their heads to get them to give you the fries, and that's lose-lose right there.

How much spare time during the day do you think I have. Give me 2-3 brief questions and then I'll answer.

Just don't drink it.

Or, if you must drink it, first dilute it with an equal amount of tequila.

Love is just two damned things after each other.
