Funny stuff

My girlfriend gave me a fine booklet she recently found, entitled "What you should know about Communism - and why." A 1966 publication by the editors of Scholastic Magazines, it was "adapted by Matthew Mestrovic, Ph.D., from the series of fiteen articles published under the same title in Junior Scholastic."

This particular book appeared to have served as a textbook in the fine public school system of Elgin, Illinois, although I can't date its last use. Somehow it ended up at a flea market down here.

Most obviously, its tone suggests that it is written for consumption by very young schoolchildren. I allow that in the more opaque propaganda techniques of the mid-20th century Cold War era, the tone of textbooks did not have such false pretentions of ideological inertness as is common now, but I still don't see how it could survive a pass through basic faculties of critical thought.

In our day, propaganda typically suggests of itself that it is free from any sort of bias, since that is necessary to establish its credibility. This fine piece of work does no such thing, employing frighteningly overt non-sequiturs, selective truths, and infantile simplifications with not even a thin veil of historical "neutrality" or even any sort of "sophistication" in analysis. For that reason, it is very instructive. Of course, much of the tactic is all the more relevant now, mainly in that the facts presented are not based on complete fabrications, but rather on half-truths and proofs by assertion concerning their basis. The area of contention is not in sheer historical fact, but rather in why and how various things happened, and by whom they were perpetrated. It is the causal connections that are the brilliant works of fantasy.

Some choice quotes follow, in order of their appearance in the book (this is quite amusing, especially whereas the first one is a kind of introductory paragraph):

  • Have you stopped to think about the money cost of communism to every American family? Ask your father about his taxes. Probably he'll tell you that a large part of his income goes to pay federal income taxes. About a third to half of your family's tax bill is the cost of communism. It is the cost of billions of dollars worth of guns, missiles, ships, and planes to defend our country and our allies. The purpose of all these arms is to keep the Free World strong, in case of a Communist attack. Before long you too will be paying part of this tax against communism.

  • Even without the danger of war, there is another danger. This is the possibility that many peopel in free countries would be fooled into thinking that communism isn't a bad idea.

  • In a Communist America, the freedoms that Americans love most would vanish.

  • You may ask: "What can I do about all this? I'm just one young person in school. The job of winning this struggle is up to the generals and Senators and other important people in our government."

  • The true Communist has great faith in communism. He believes in the Communist idea that the whole universe is a sort of automatic machine. In a universe like that, there is no room for God.

  • Communists often call their system "Marxism-Leninism."

  • To what extent do we dare let the Communists use American liberties (freedom of speech, of the press, etc.) for the purpose of destroying those very liberties?

Who is to say that I am a purveyor of said 'communist rubbish'? I was just quoting from some booklet that came into my possession.

In a Communist America, the freedoms that Americans love most would vanish.
True, by any reasonable standard.

The true Communist has great faith in communism. He believes in the Communist idea that the whole universe is a sort of automatic machine. In a universe like that, there is no room for God.
Sounds reasonably true, probably not true for dissidents.

Communists often call their system "Marxism-Leninism."
Unable to confirm this point.

Why do these amuse you?

Because. by valeko (6.00 / 1) #9 Wed Nov 19, 2003 at 04:14:10 AM EST
Because it is absolutely imperative and axiomatic to all of these propositions that the policies of the Soviet state and the idiosyncrasies of the Soviet system be equated, in the most literal way possible, with the definition of Communism. This paves the way for asserting the inevitability of numerous outcomes, not the least of which is that Stalinist terror is a most natural, logical extension of Communism and its heritage.

The idea that men who believe in comradeship, solidarity, and meaningful, productive work must of necessarity create a totalitarian state amuses me to no end.

You praise communism... by ti dave (3.00 / 1) #12 Wed Nov 19, 2003 at 04:30:14 AM EST
Not necessarily Communism. The goals are laudable, the results are usually not.*.

Difficult to say. by valeko (3.00 / 0) #14 Wed Nov 19, 2003 at 11:03:54 AM EST
Difficult to say with any certainty, in light of the narrowness of the historical experience.

In light of its failure, I support a moratorium on further experiments in Communism.

I'm conservative like that.

Propaganda by zaichik (6.00 / 2) #6 Wed Nov 19, 2003 at 02:17:15 AM EST
Interestingly enough, when comparing propaganda with some of my Ukrainian friends, it turns out that both sides (USSR, West) used the same propaganda, when describing the other side, and for justifying their current course of action.  Both sides said that most of the people in the other system were poor and rules by a rich elite for example.

Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before.

And for both, it were true. [n/t] by valeko (5.00 / 2) #10 Wed Nov 19, 2003 at 04:16:49 AM EST

Kind of like what you hear these days on Fox News.

I feel bad for our UKian brethren, stuck under an inefficient government ruled by an incompetent hereditary ruling class. I can't imagine what that's like, but it must surely suck - georgeha
