A connection struck me between the fall of the middle class stuff, and the overteaching children stuff.

Tyler Cowen thinks that all the middle-class office jobs that involved remembering and manipulating information are being decimated by automation and offshoring. The jobs that exist in the future will be ones involving physical dexterity, like dentistry and plumbing; or social adroitness, like management or customer service or salesmanship. If so, we're getting the kids to spend every waking hour on test-passing, but they'd probably be better off building model boats or playing cops and robbers: developing the physical and social skills that might actually be of some use in the economt of the future.
