I like Islay Scotches by toxicfur (4.00 / 1) #1 Wed Jan 11, 2012 at 11:03:16 AM EST
Laphoiag was the first of those I had, and I love that one, but there were others I liked more (though I can't recall which ones - I rarely drink whisk(e)y these days. I mostly stick to beer, for reasons mostly having to do with cost and laziness.

Try the Lagavulin.  It's damn nice.

Peaty by Herring (4.00 / 1) #2 Wed Jan 11, 2012 at 11:03:20 AM EST
Bunnahabhain isn't very peaty for a Islay. Quite pleasant.

A couple of years ago someone got me a quarter-cask Laphroaig that was really nice. Not nearly as phenolic as the normal stuff.

I do like the Lagavulin 16.

I once had some Ardbeg 17 yo which was much nicer/mellower than the 10 but Google indicates that it's around the £200 a bottle mark ...

I've been told that the quarter-cask is the best Laphroaig.  As for Ardbeg, I haven't seen any that old, but I don't have a good selection around here.  I want to try Bunnahabhain as well as Bruichladdich.

The default Smokehead is an excellent 'party' whisky.

Probably not available in the States.

Bruichladdich by BadDoggie (4.00 / 2) #14 Wed Jan 11, 2012 at 01:31:32 PM EST
Islay, they don't peat at all (with one exception), and they're the only ones on the island with a full bottling plant. Almost everything on Islay other than Bowmore and Bruichladdich belongs to Diageo. Sadly, this includes Caol Ila.

woof.

Ardbeg... by ana (4.00 / 1) #5 Wed Jan 11, 2012 at 11:29:15 AM EST
is my poison of choice lately.

There's an interesting American whiskey from Stranahans which I bought because it says Colorado Whiskey on the bottle (and I'm from there); quite drinkable.

I'll have to look for it.  The High West is from Utah, of all places.

For my 30th birthday by barooo (4.00 / 1) #15 Wed Jan 11, 2012 at 01:50:15 PM EST
I bought myself a $250 bottle of Laphroig 30.  I managed to make it last a year, having the last dram on my 31st birthday.

It was fucking amazing.

I personally love the Islays.  Caol Ila 18 is probably my favorite at the moment.

man, i need a beefy taco now.

I'm a fan of Laphroaig by lm (4.00 / 1) #18 Wed Jan 11, 2012 at 07:35:42 PM EST
A friend of mine once traded me a couple of bottle's of Isle of Jura for a car that I wanted to get rid of. I think I got the better end of that deal. I quite liked the Jura but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

I'm also a big fan of Buillet's rye. It's done quite nicely.

As for Japan, I've managed to find Yamazaki stateside. It's quite nice.

And it's cheap and Trader Joes.  (Though "cheap" is relative, but we're talking $30/bottle.)

Which? by Gedvondur (2.00 / 0) #21 Wed Jan 11, 2012 at 10:12:21 PM EST
The Bulleit Rye, Laphroaig, or Yamazuki?

Heh, any drinkable single malt for $30 a bottle is a good deal. I pay $40 for plain old Glenlivet 12. The Glenmorangie 18 I have is $100 a bottle. I drink that sparingly. :-)

Rye by Gedvondur (2.00 / 0) #22 Wed Jan 11, 2012 at 10:13:26 PM EST
I found the High West to be good, but considerably more harsh than the Bulleit rye.

I'm told that Whistle Pig is the rye to have, but I gotta go to Milwaukee or Chicago to get it.

Favorite? by iGrrrl (4.00 / 1) #25 Thu Jan 12, 2012 at 08:05:53 AM EST
I've had all but 6 of the scotches on the picture. My favorite isn't on there: Balvenie 21 Portwood.

I don't like sherry cask scotches so much, but Balvenie also has a rum cask that is nice. Haven't gone as deeply into the bourbons, but they seem to be more variable.

I really wish I could get into bourbon. I just can't stand the heavy oak taste. It drives me away every time.
