I will hand you a list on my birthday. If you start thinking about Christmas in December, that is when things start getting to be Too Late to organise properly.

Really. I had everything but the guitar bought and boxed and hidden before we moved (I wrapped all yours and the puppy's stuff before we moved in case you or she got into the boxes).

It upset me that there was another IOU for me under the tree, but I know you don't plan for Christmas the way I do. So I'm over it. I still think that taking a holiday is a better idea than the original gift though.* Maybe a cottage for a couple of days in the UK? One with a jacuzzi? Or leaving the puppy at my parents' and an overnight in Chester?

*this may or may not be weird wife code for "I think you should outwardly agree with me and surprise me with the original intended gift on my birthday." Just sayin'.

I thought by sugar spun (4.00 / 1) #3 Tue Dec 27, 2011 at 03:34:27 PM EST
that was exactly what I had done.

[Translation for the benefit of BD: I would like to spend a night or two somewhere nice in the next month, possibly leaving the puppy with my parents but not going too far away that we couldn't come back if necessary and almost definitely involving some sort of relaxation (massage, jacuzzi, something like that, check Groupon and ask me to book it because my account has a few pounds credit and I get cashback) and a nice dinner. And I would like the Christmas gift to be hidden away and presented to me on my birthday with no IOUs but definitely wrapping paper and a space for it on the countertop. If that works for you too, my love. Thank you. Also, I will make sure my Amazon list is populated for Christmas very early so things are simple and there is no stalking of the postman in late December.]

Small plane: no way. Not ever. Not even in case of zombie apocalypse or needing to take a donated organ to someone we love. Not even if I stay on the ground while you and the Puppy go up.

Just, no.

I have a wife-purchased Les Paul as well. by technician (4.00 / 4) #5 Tue Dec 27, 2011 at 08:24:26 PM EST
Mine's a cloud top (gray / silver / black) and sounds better than any guitar I've ever owned, including the Ibanez that I've modified to be a METAL guitar.

Wives are awesome. Wives who buy guitars, even more so.

I never had a new GEE-TAARR before and the sound of this is really good. I've heard all sorts of shit about Epiphone-Les and the '57 may well be a million times better. Or would be if I was a good enough player, which I'm not. Low riding strings along a really flat neck with clean electronics? I'm there.

(& Technician) are blessed among men.

(Well, I am too-also blessed among men, in the wife department. But no, in 31 years Dear Wife has never, so far as I know, come even close to buying me a guitar, much less a Les Paul. Although her other gifts over the years have been equally spectacular in their own ways. . .)

She has effectively checked out. She's an un-person of her own making. So it falls to me.--ad hoc (in the hole)

I wish you well to wear/play it.

Plspstrcrdngskthx. Also pix.

Interestingly, I am told I have a Wine Red Epi LP on its way to me right now. This is why I am up at 7am having not slept. Again. Ok, it isn't, but it might be. Or could be. And I can't wait.

As for the corporate history and politics, it seems clear to me for now that the Epis are by far the better value guitars. If you want to spend a couple grand (UK) on a guitar, you can do so much better than a Gibson, if you're looking for something to play. I still don't really get the point of spending that much on a guitar, unless you're paying someone to build it for you personally.

I have the ins to get a custom-built neck for any Yamadog for less than a song. B-flat tuned? No prob. 6-string bass? Covered. Busy with other things and unlikely to be on stage again any time soon.
