Getting fleeced by nebbish (4.00 / 1) #3 Mon Dec 20, 2010 at 11:18:47 AM EST
Puts me off the more touristy parts of Italy. When I visited Pisa a few of us ate in a lovely family-owned cafe, very nice and friendly, and we were very surprised when they added an extra 15 euros to the bill. Even more surprised when they argued over it when we pointed it out. And kept on and on even though we had a fluent Italian speaker with us which scuppered the fact they suddenly couldn't speak English any more. They just wouldn't give up.

fleecing by Merekat (4.00 / 1) #7 Mon Dec 20, 2010 at 11:49:08 AM EST
Not been fleeced in restaurants, but the agressive begging and tat selling puts me right off. I do not like being chased around the place by blokes trying to tie stuff onto me and then charge me for it.

this happened to us in china. by garlic (2.00 / 0) #11 Mon Dec 20, 2010 at 04:07:18 PM EST
I was surprised my gf let the guy get so far into his spiel as to have handed her the thing and ask for money.

Didn't happen to us in italy in rome or venice though. still probably got fleeced though.

Don't think I was particularly fleeced by TheophileEscargot (4.00 / 2) #10 Mon Dec 20, 2010 at 03:35:44 PM EST
I did eat in a couple of touristy restaurants close to the hotel though, which presumably had inflated prices.

I prefer the winter: I'm not really into beaches and am into museums and old buildings, so it makes sense to go when those are quiet. Had a few palazzi and churches to myself, which probably wouldn't have happened in spring or summer.

... if only you would fix your horizon! I hate it when the water flows out of the pic.

Pisa is the most shitty place I've been in Italy. Won't be going back there again.

If I were going to Italy to see left wing nutters by brokkr (4.00 / 1) #9 Mon Dec 20, 2010 at 01:54:28 PM EST
I'd go to Livorno.

I like Perugia a lot. Umbria in general. Haven't been to Northern Italy (except Bolzano - twice) which is a damn shame.

Ha! Rome is the real deal. by Tonatiuh (2.00 / 0) #14 Thu Dec 23, 2010 at 12:47:20 PM EST
Every time I have been there I have been caught by strikes or demonstrations.

The first time I tried to visit the Coliseum a government union, whose members worked in the attraction, was on strike and thus one could not enter. Bastardi!
