Cell phones by ad hoc (2.00 / 0) #1 Wed Oct 14, 2009 at 11:28:23 AM EST
I've also noticed that people seem to need to pace while on cell phones. There's no reception in the bar next door, so people must go outside, where they pace up and down the sidewalk with phones pressed.

I pace on any sort of cordless phone by infinitera (2.00 / 0) #6 Wed Oct 14, 2009 at 01:01:56 PM EST
I would pace with my desk phone at work if I could.

We're expecting freezing weather tonight by georgeha (2.00 / 0) #2 Wed Oct 14, 2009 at 11:38:03 AM EST
and even living in the city, my garden might be dead tomorrow, we'll miss the basil.

Here also. by ana (2.00 / 0) #3 Wed Oct 14, 2009 at 11:45:38 AM EST
We brought in the pot with the sage and rosemary in it. We'll harvest the rest of the basil and friends tonight. Basil can be made into pesto and frozen in ice cube trays for later use.

The chives are in a flower pot out front, and could be easily rescued.

a scary inspection of the electricals by wiredog (2.00 / 0) #4 Wed Oct 14, 2009 at 12:42:55 PM EST
Years ago I lived in a house with a fusebox (not a breaker box) and wiring that was older than I am now. A new roommate moved in who was an electrician. As soon as he could afford a better place he moved out.

After I moved out the place was condemned.

We have fuses, not breakers. by toxicfur (2.00 / 0) #5 Wed Oct 14, 2009 at 12:54:45 PM EST
And I sincerely hope that we're not condemned (that would suck). I suspect that quite a lot of the electricals (like everything else in the house) was DIY sometime in the late 70s by the previous owners who -- like many DIYers -- did things just well enough to get by, but certainly not professionally.

The amount of suck that you can put up with can be mind-boggling, but it only really hits you when it then ceases to suck. -- Kellnerin

Hmmm. By the late 70's? by wiredog (2.00 / 0) #8 Wed Oct 14, 2009 at 01:50:47 PM EST
I think everyone, even DIYers, was using breakers by then. I haven't seen fuses in anything younger than 1970.

Scary Electricals by mrgoat (4.00 / 2) #7 Wed Oct 14, 2009 at 01:25:39 PM EST
We toured a house while househunting that was advertised as having "new electricals". In the basement, growing out of the fuse box was a massive tumbleweed, about 3 feet in diameter, of tangled, uncapped, and in some cases un-rubber-outsided-of wires. I'm pretty sure it streched into extra dimensions - a Hypertangle.

We didn't buy the house.

Dunno yet. by ana (2.00 / 0) #14 Wed Oct 14, 2009 at 08:23:17 PM EST
If I'm rewriting BBT yet again, prolly not. But I'd sorta like to do it anyway, and perhaps let BBT rest for a while longer.

the deadline date is my 40th birthday. And in between now and then, I have a tremendous amount of brooding, introspection, self doubt and angst to get through. And also this beer.

I will make an effort this weekend.
