Though he sometimes overreaches a bit and ascribes environmental causes to all societal collapses, when there's plenty of other things that can make a society go splat.

Still, it certainly has happened, and the warning is timely.

It's not as good as GGS by wiredog (2.00 / 0) #2 Thu Apr 10, 2008 at 01:07:36 PM EST
Actually, Guns, Germs, and Steel wasn't that good either. The subject is, and the examples shown, but Diamond's writing gets a bit tiring after a while.

Be nice to see what Simon Winchester or Charlie Pellegrino could do with the same ideas.

He is painstakingly thorough, and belabours the point.  Admittedly not qualities conducive to entertainment, but given the subject matter, it seems appropriate.

It's also pretty repetitive by wumpus (2.00 / 0) #5 Fri Apr 11, 2008 at 08:20:15 AM EST
from the examples in GGS. Also, if you realize how fast you can grow a forest suitable for particleboard, nearly all the examples (No Trees) aren't modern dangers.

Fascinating reading.  Especially the chapter on Australia.
