Isn't there some package software that can do what you want?  There are tons of tools, both free and otherwise that can monitor a router.

All systems (routers and other systems) are monitored, through a mix of Nagios, Cacti, Netcool etc. In fact, a lot of the stuff I write is helper scripts for said monitoring tools.

We're interested in doing a few things that are not available right out of the box.

My MythTV box has recorded multiple inputs - as many as three, two of them HD - with less than 1 GB of RAM since it was created three and a half years ago.
