--------It's political correctness gone mad!
I was going to write that sarcasm was a bad thing, but with your witty, incisive and well thought out comment, I realised how great it can be.[ Parent ]
Worse, sarcasm wins the debate by closing it down. The opposing world view is invalidated structurally rather than intellectually. Its proponents surrender because they have been laughed at, not because they have been refuted, and a decision gets taken in a way that will lead to anguish if things go seriously wrong later.
So sarcasm forces a kind of superficiality. Below the level of balancing the pro's and con's of a decision lies the question of whether we are considering the issue in the right way. The sarcist dare not acknowledge any such deeper concerns. If he cannot depend on the shared world view, he cannot reliably target his sarcasm to miss his friends and hit his enemies. If he cannot depend on the shared world view, his sarcasm may be blamed later when things turn out badly.
Where there is sarcasm we may be sure that people are sticking to traditional ways of thinking. That is usually the right thing to do, but doing it automatically is reactionary. Sometimes we are doing things wrong and need to think things through from first principles. At these times sarcasm is revealed as a soul-sucking force for evil.
