I think I voted for doggerel, motty and TPD, but it was late last night and I was vey vey junk so can't be entirely sure. I could easily have voted for four or five of the others as well.

We had a slight family emergency last week (old relative with a shattered hip, and I had to dash down to see them for a few days), which kind of scuppered my proper CMFC plans.

I was originally going to play properly and do a fluid arrangement between piano and guitar (with no drums) but knew I wouldn't have the time, so instead transposed an available score into MIDI format and used that to drive two different synthesizers (in truth, I just played about about with the synth settings until they sounded like a video game). The beat was added quickly, in about ten minutes, before I recorded and converted to MP3. The entire thing took about an hour and a half, and most of that was translating the score into MIDI. I left home to head south about twenty minutes after uploading it. Given the constraints, I think it sounds OK, if not as "classical" as it should; the only thing which I'm slightly bothered about is the squared-off nature of the timing and flow, which is a consequence of the unnaturalistic direct translation nature of the "playing".

The piece itself is "Por Una Cabeza" by Carlos Gardel. It's a South American tango from the thirties. That may not be strictly classical, but what's a slight genre jump between friends?

I was in the middle of writing "Argentinian tango", and then remembered that there is some mystery and debate surrounding Gardel's nationality and ancestry. Officially, he was born in Colombia, although some claim Uruguay and some others claim France, and although he grew up and spend most of his time in Argentina, he travelled a lot and several other countries try and claim him as their own.

Thus, I backed up and replaced "Argentinian" with "South American" in order to avoid numerous possible gotchas from Gardel-knowledgable readers (although really, by any sane standards, he was Argentinian). In doing so, I leapt over the pit of inaccuracy and banged my head on the low lying beam of redundancy. C'est la vie.

Smartarse. :)

...with the exception of a few violin licks, i think that the entire peice COULD be performed by a junior high orchestra. when you only get two rehearsals before a concert, you tend to scale things back...if you're smart. the most difficult part is the rhythm.
all of my pieces are available for anyone who wants to see/hear/play them. i'm VERY open about that. so if there's interest, i'm pretty sure i can locate a score...

Okay, Driusan's entry made me laugh very hard... I may even listen to it again if I need to giggle later.

The other entries however, were so good, what excellent talent we have here. We even got some Baltic music represented (I also love Arvo!).

I was planning on doing my Lucia De L'Amour aria (sung in " The Fifth Element" with excellent score added by Nick Serra), but life was WAY too busy during this contest. Maybe when it comes around again.

Now I have to try and figure out who the heck I am going to vote for... this will be hard.

i put them on my mp3 player (which i leave permanently on shuffle) last week. as such, i'm not yet sure i've listened to them all. but on my walk to work this morning through amsterdam's hungover monday morning streets, yicky yacky's track came on and i felt immediately as though i was walking through the intro sequence to some post modern horror movie ala 28 days later.

as such, yy for the win.

I finally bought a set of headphones to listen to these at work.

I couldn't get into the first entries, but from komet onwards I found the entries perked up. I don't think I can pick a single favourite from the last 5. clock's piece had me thinking of "Psycho" and I was fascinated by the contrast between komet's entry and motty's version.
